Pantry Pests in South Florida
Moths in the kitchen and beetles in the flour: how to name the pest, find the package and stop it spreading.
$50 OFF your first service + FREE inspectionNew customers · No code needed · No expirationPantry pests don't come from a dirty kitchen. They usually come home inside a package from the store, then breed in your cabinets. You'll notice them one of two ways: small moths fluttering around the kitchen at night, or tiny beetles crawling in the rice, flour, spices or dog food. Finding and throwing out the infested product is always step one. Call or text anytime: 833-845-9284.

Why a South Florida kitchen keeps them going
Warm temperatures speed up a pantry pest's life cycle, so a South Florida kitchen keeps them breeding all year, with no winter slowdown. Many of them chew through paper, cardboard and thin plastic, which is why hard, sealed containers matter. Rice weevils develop inside single grains, so a bag can look clean at the store and still be infested. Indian meal moth larvae leave silky webbing in food and often crawl up walls and onto the ceiling to pupate, far from the package they came from. Garages are a common source too, especially bags of bird seed and dry pet food. Start the cleanout by checking every opened package, including spices, pasta and pet treats, and throw out anything with webbing, live insects or holes. Wipe the shelves, then keep what's left in sealed containers. Our guide to bugs in the pantry walks through the full cleanout step by step. If you're leaving for the summer, clear out open flour, cereal and pet treats before you go.

| Drugstore beetle | About 1/8 inch | Reddish-brown | Spices, flour, dried pasta, dry pet food | Tiny holes bored through packaging |
| Cigarette beetle | About 1/10 inch | Light reddish-brown, oval and humped | Paprika, chili powder, pet food, herbal teas | Humped beetles flying to lights |
