El Portal is one of the smallest municipalities in Miami-Dade, a village of quiet residential streets along the north bank of the Little River. It's a designated bird sanctuary, and its free-roaming peacocks are a familiar sight on lawns and rooftops. The village also protects an archaeological zone that includes a Tequesta burial mound, a reminder that people have lived beside this river for a very long time.

Tree-lined streets, older homes, a slow tidal river and a lot of wildlife make El Portal a lovely place to live. They also create steady pressure from rodents, mosquitoes, roaches and ants. Pro-Spray Pest Control is family-run, licensed and insured, and we treat homes in El Portal with a targeted approach that plans around pets, birds and gardens. Call or Text 833-845-9284 for a FREE inspection and $50 off your first service.

Pest control in a bird sanctuary

Residents here care about their birds, and so do we. Our work is targeted: we place baits in cracks, voids and secured stations instead of broadcasting products across open yards. Rodent bait goes only inside tamper-resistant stations, and we set traps in protected spots that peacocks, songbirds and pets can't reach. Outdoor treatments focus on the foundation, entry points and pest resting areas close to the home, not on open lawns or garden beds. We don't treat lawns, plants or shrubs.

If you have specific concerns about birds, pets or a vegetable garden, tell us at the inspection and we'll plan around them.

Living on the north bank of the Little River

Homes closest to the Little River deal with moisture, shade and wildlife. The riverbanks hold mangroves, dense brush and soft mud, which are great habitat for mosquitoes, no-see-ums and rats. Raccoons and opossums use the river corridor to travel and often bring fleas into yards along the way.

On riverfront properties, we inspect the side of the house facing the water most closely: seawalls and banks, sheds, woodpiles, crawl spaces and the gaps where utilities enter the house. A clear, dry strip between the vegetation and your walls is the single best defense.

Older homes under a big tree canopy

El Portal's homes date from many decades, including plenty of early and mid-century houses with wood trim, crawl spaces, porches and older roofs. Big shade trees line the streets and arch over many houses. That canopy keeps homes cool, but it also gives rats a direct route to the roof, drops leaves into gutters and keeps walls damp.

When we inspect an older El Portal home, we look at soffits, fascia boards, attic vents, roof-wall junctions, crawl-space vents and old pipe penetrations. Small repairs at these points often matter as much as any treatment.

Roof rats in the canopy

The roof rat is the most common rodent we find in El Portal. It's sleek, dark and an excellent climber. It nests in palms, dense vines and tree cavities, runs along branches and power lines and drops onto rooftops at night. From there it slips into attics through gaps at the roof edge, damaged vent screens and openings around plumbing vents.

Listen for scratching in the ceiling after dark, and watch for droppings in the attic or garage, gnawed fruit, and grease marks along beams. Our rodent control finds the entry points first, then uses traps and tamper-resistant bait stations, seals the openings and follows up until activity stops. Trimming branches back from the roof cuts off the highway.

Mosquitoes in a river village

The river, shaded yards, birdbaths and garden containers give mosquitoes plenty of breeding spots. In a bird sanctuary, birdbaths are everywhere, and they're one of the biggest sources. Change birdbath water at least twice a week. Empty saucers, buckets and tarps, and flush bromeliads with a hose. The Asian tiger mosquito breeds in small containers and bites during the day. The southern house mosquito prefers dirtier water and bites at night.

Our mosquito control is a monthly service with a schedule you can adjust. A technician uses a backpack fogger on the shaded resting areas around the home, treats water that can't be dumped with larvicide, and points out breeding spots. We can also schedule an event spray before an outdoor gathering.

Palmetto bugs in leaves and crawl spaces

Leaf litter, mulch, firewood and crawl spaces are home base for the American cockroach, the big palmetto bug. It lives outdoors in damp, sheltered places and comes inside through drains, gaps under doors, crawl-space openings and loose screens, especially after a downpour.

Rake leaves away from the foundation, keep gutters clear, and store firewood off the ground and away from the house. We treat the exterior perimeter, crawl spaces, drains and entry points.

Ants: indoor trails and garden mounds

The trails of tiny ants across a kitchen counter are usually white-footed ants or ghost ants. Under the big trees, larger Florida carpenter ants show up at night, often nesting in damp wood, tree cavities or hollow door frames. Outdoors, fire ants build mounds in sunny spots, and big-headed ants push up little piles of soil between pavers and along walkways.

We use baits indoors so workers carry the treatment back to the colony, and we treat fire ant mounds and ant nests in the yard around the home.

Fleas and wildlife

Raccoons, opossums and stray cats move through El Portal along the river and between yards. They carry cat fleas, and fleas drop eggs where animals rest, like under porches, decks, sheds and in crawl spaces. Pets pick them up there and bring them inside. We treat the home and those outdoor resting areas, and each pet needs a vet-recommended flea product the same week.

Ticks are less common but do show up on dogs that roam brushy edges near the water. Check pets after walks, especially along the ears and between the toes.

Spiders, orb weavers and wasps

Big trees mean big webs. The golden silk orb weaver strings large golden webs between trees and across paths in late summer and fall. It's harmless to people and eats a lot of flying insects. The brown widow is the one to watch for in sheds, under patio furniture and in mailboxes. Mud daubers build tube-shaped mud nests under eaves and porch ceilings, and paper wasps build open combs. We treat spider hiding spots and remove wasp nests around the house.

Moisture pests near the river

Damp soil, shade and leaf litter bring pillbugs and sowbugs, springtails and millipedes right up to the foundation. After heavy rain they wander under doors and into garages and sunrooms. They're harmless, but they're a sign that moisture is collecting near the house. Pull mulch back from the walls, fix leaky hose bibs and point sprinklers away from the foundation. We treat the perimeter where they gather.

Scorpions in woodpiles and stone

The Florida bark scorpion lives under bark, in woodpiles, stacked stone and debris, and sometimes wanders into garages and homes. Its sting is painful but generally not dangerous to healthy adults. Wear gloves when moving firewood or stones, and shake out shoes left outdoors. Clearing debris near the house and treating the perimeter reduces encounters.

Fruit trees and garden harvests

Many El Portal yards grow mango, avocado, citrus, papaya or a vegetable garden. Ripe and fallen fruit feeds rats, attracts fruit flies and ants, and ferments in the heat. Pick up fallen fruit every day or two and keep compost in a closed bin away from the house. We work around gardens and fruit trees, and our treatments focus on the home and its entry points, not on plants.

Kitchens, drains and small flies

Older plumbing can leave slow drains and dry traps. Drain flies breed in the film inside drains and look like little fuzzy moths on the bathroom wall. Fruit flies breed in overripe produce and recycling. Scrub drains with a brush and hot water, run water in seldom-used drains and keep ripe fruit in the refrigerator.

Bed bugs

Bed bugs come in with luggage, used furniture and visitors, not from dirt. Look for small dark spots on mattress seams, rusty stains on sheets and bites in a line. Our bed bug treatment is a targeted inspection and treatment with follow-up visits.

Bird feeders, spilled seed and rodents

In a village that loves its birds, feeders are everywhere, and spilled seed is one of the most reliable food sources a rat can find. Seed on the ground under a feeder also draws mice, ants and palmetto bugs. Use a tray under the feeder, sweep up spills, bring feed indoors at night and store birdseed in metal or heavy plastic bins with tight lids. If you put out food for the peacocks or other birds, do it in small amounts they'll finish quickly so nothing is left overnight.

Porches, sunrooms and screened rooms

Many older El Portal homes have front porches, screened rooms or Florida rooms added over the years. Those additions are often built on a separate slab with their own roofline, so the joint between the old house and the new room is a common gap for ants, roaches and spiders. Torn screens and gaps under screen doors let mosquitoes and no-see-ums in. We check those joints carefully and recommend simple repairs such as new screen, door sweeps and sealant where needed.

Storms and high water on the Little River

Heavy rain and storm surge can push the Little River up into nearby yards and streets. When water rises, fire ants raft and settle on dry ground, rats move into garages and attics, palmetto bugs come up through drains, and mosquitoes hatch in standing water within days. See our guides to post-flood pest control, floating fire ants and rodents after a hurricane.

Protecting a historic neighborhood

El Portal's history is part of what makes it special. Older homes and protected grounds deserve a careful approach: no heavy-handed spraying, and a focus on sealing, sanitation and targeted treatment where pests actually live. That approach also happens to work best over the long run.

The pests we see most in El Portal

Roof rats in the tree canopy, mosquitoes and no-see-ums near the river, palmetto bugs in leaf litter and crawl spaces, white-footed and carpenter ants, fleas from wildlife, large orb weavers and brown widows, wasps under eaves, and moisture pests along the foundation.
