Mosquito control in Margate: canals, lakes and your backyard

The city is mostly land, but its canals and lakes run behind a lot of backyards, and after summer rain every bucket, plant saucer and clogged gutter adds to it. Adult mosquitoes spend the day resting in shade, under hedges, in dense shrubs and along the shady side of the house, then come out at dusk.

Our mosquito service treats those resting spots with a backpack fogger outdoors only. We never use it indoors, and we never spray over or toward the canal or lake. Where water can't be dumped, such as bromeliad cups, gutters and drains, we apply larvicide where the label allows, never in the canal or lake, a fish pond or a fountain. On monthly mosquito plans we also place larval traps that carry a growth regulator, like birth control for insects, which stops the larvae in them from growing into adults. Mosquito service is quoted after we see the yard. More on the service at mosquito control, and on why summer is worse at rainy season mosquitoes.

How this fits with the city's program. The City of Margate runs its own year-round mosquito control through Public Works, with staff trained and licensed by the state, and residents can call Public Works, which checks the area and schedules targeted spraying if it's needed. That work covers the neighborhood. Ours covers your own lot: the hedges, shrubs and breeding spots behind your house. The two work well together. We explain the difference in what county mosquito control does, and canal-lot owners may also like canal home pests in Broward.

Roaches and ants in condos and attached homes

When units share walls, pests share them too. German cockroaches breed indoors and move through plumbing and wiring gaps, so a neighbor's problem can become yours. We treat your kitchen and bathrooms, the gaps under sinks and behind appliances, and the outside edges we can reach, and if it looks like pests are coming from next door, we'll tell you. We come back about two weeks later; one follow-up is often enough, though a heavy infestation can need more. If you're seeing tiny roaches near the kitchen sink, read small roaches in the kitchen, and see our roach control service.

Ghost ants and big-headed ants trail in along baseboards and window frames, especially when the weather turns. Our ant control works on the trails inside and the mounds and nests outside.

Older homes: palmetto bugs and roof rats

The city started as a town in 1955 and became a city in 1961, so many streets have houses that have stood for decades, with mature trees over the roof. Palmetto bugs come up through older drains and in under doors after rain. Drain treatments, as needed, are part of the quarterly plan. Roof rats climb trees and fences to the roofline and get in through vents and soffit gaps; our rodent control is a separate service from the quarterly plan. We trap, place bait stations according to the label, and seal the entry points ourselves, with the number of follow-up visits told up front. We don't repair damaged wood or roof tile. The guarantee covers rodent jobs too.

Pests we treat

  • Mosquitoes and no-see-ums in the yard, on shrubs and hedges.
  • German cockroaches and palmetto bugs.
  • Ants, inside and out, including fire ant mounds in the yard.
  • Fleas in the yard and inside. We never spray animals.
  • Roof rats and mice, as a separate rodent service.
  • Spiders, silverfish, flies and pantry pests.
  • Wasps, yellowjackets and carpenter bees.
  • Bed bugs. How many follow-up visits you need depends on the size and severity of the infestation. We'll tell you what we find after the inspection. See bed bug treatment.

How we treat a home

Step 1: Call, text or book online

Tell us what you're seeing and where. We'll set up the free inspection.

Step 2: Inspection inside and out

We walk the yard, the canal or lake edge, the roofline, the garage and the rooms where you've seen activity.

Step 3: We explain what we found

You get a plain answer on what the pest is, how it's getting in, and which plan fits.

Step 4: Targeted treatments

Bait and crack-and-crevice treatment inside, a band around the foundation outside, and, on mosquito plans, treatment of the shrubs and hedges where adult mosquitoes rest. Every product is applied according to its label. Keep kids and pets off treated areas until dry, and follow your technician's instructions.

Step 5: Follow-up

German roaches get a check about two weeks later, and plan customers can call or text for a free re-service between visits.

Pest control FAQs

Does the City of Margate spray for mosquitoes?

Yes. Public Works runs a year-round mosquito program, and residents can call to have their area checked for targeted spraying. We treat your own yard: the shrubs, hedges and breeding spots around your house, never over or toward the water.

How much does pest control cost?

The quarterly plan is $125 per quarter, about $42 a month, and the inspection is free. Monthly plans, custom plans and mosquito service are priced after we see the property.

What's the hardest bug to get rid of in a house?

Usually German roaches, because they breed fast indoors. We treat where they hide and come back about two weeks later. One follow-up is often enough, but it depends on what we find.

Do you treat condos?

Yes. We treat your unit and the outside edges we can reach, and we'll tell you if pests seem to be coming from a neighboring unit.
