Rodents After a Hurricane: Roof Rats and Storm-Damaged Homes
Family-run, licensed and insured pest control in South Florida.
$50 OFF your first service + FREE inspectionNew customers · No code needed · No expirationAfter a hurricane or a strong tropical storm, a lot of South Florida homeowners start hearing it a few nights later: scratching in the ceiling, running in the attic, something moving in the walls. It's usually roof rats. Storms knock out the trees, palms and debris piles rats were living in, and they go looking for new shelter. A home with a loose soffit or a damaged vent is an easy place to move into.
Why Rats Move In After a Storm
Roof rats are climbers. They live in palm heads, thick vines, ficus and other dense trees, and they travel along fences, power lines and branches. High winds strip that cover and scatter their food sources. Flooding pushes ground-dwelling Norway rats out of burrows and storm drains too. At the same moment, the storm may have opened new gaps in your roofline. Put those together and you have rodents with nowhere to go and a house with an open door.
Learn more about the two main species in our roof rat and Norway rat guides.
Storm Damage Rats Use to Get Inside
- Soffits: panels that blew loose, bent or pulled away from the fascia
- Gable and ridge vents: torn screens or bent louvers
- Roof-to-wall gaps: where a lanai, porch roof or addition meets the main house
- Fascia and drip edge: boards that split or lifted
- Broken tiles and shingles: openings near the edges of the roof
- A/C lines and plumbing vents: seals and covers that were knocked out of place
- Garage doors: bottom seals torn or doors pushed off track
A roof rat can squeeze through a gap about the size of a quarter, so damage that looks small from the ground matters.
Signs of Rodents After a Storm
- Scratching or running in the attic or walls, mostly at night
- Droppings in the attic, garage, pantry or behind appliances
- Chewed wires, insulation, food packaging or A/C line insulation
- Greasy rub marks along beams, pipes or the roofline
- Fruit or nuts gnawed and left on the ground
- Pets staring at the ceiling or walls
What You Can Do Right Away
- Walk the outside of the house and note any loose soffits, vents or roof gaps.
- Cut back branches and palm fronds touching the roof once it's safe to do so.
- Store food, pet food and birdseed in sealed containers.
- Move storm debris piles and stacked materials away from the house.
- Don't sweep or vacuum droppings dry. Wet them with a disinfectant first and wear gloves.
Major structural repairs, like replacing roofing or fascia, are a job for your roofer or contractor. We focus on finding the rodent openings and sealing them.
How Pro-Spray Handles Rodents After a Hurricane
1. Inspection. We check the roofline, soffits, vents, attic, garage and ground level to find where rodents are living and every place they're getting in.
2. Rodent exclusion. We seal entry points with rodent-proof materials like metal mesh and flashing, so new rats can't follow the ones already inside.
3. Trapping and control. We set traps and bait stations in the right places for the rodents you have, keeping kids and pets in mind.
4. Follow-up. We come back to check traps, remove rodents and make sure the seals are holding.
We get to storm calls as fast as our schedule allows. Call or text us and we'll give you the earliest open time. Rodent control is included in our general pest control service, and our Bug Free Guarantee applies: if pests come back between visits, so do we, at no extra cost.
