Biscayne Park is a small, almost entirely residential village tucked beside Miami Shores in northeast Miami-Dade. It's known for its heavy tree canopy, its wide landscaped medians and its village hall, a log cabin built in 1933 at 640 NE 114th Street. Streets here feel more like a park than a city grid, with oaks, palms and flowering trees shading most blocks.

All that green comes with a pest profile of its own. Rats move through the canopy from yard to yard, mosquitoes rest in thick shade, ants nest in roots and mulch, and leaf litter keeps palmetto bugs close to the house. Pro-Spray Pest Control is family-run, licensed and insured, and we look after homes throughout Biscayne Park. Call or Text 833-845-9284 for a FREE inspection and $50 off your first service.

What a heavy canopy means for your home

Trees are the best thing about this village, but from a pest's point of view, a continuous canopy is a network of bridges. A rat can travel from one end of a block to the other without touching the ground. Branches resting on roofs give insects and rodents direct access to soffits and attic vents. Shade keeps soil and walls damp, and damp walls attract ants, roaches and moisture pests.

During an inspection we look up as much as down. We note which branches touch or overhang the roof, which vines climb the walls, and where gutters are packed with leaves. Then we tell you which trimming jobs will make the biggest difference.

Roof rats in oaks and palms

The roof rat thrives in Biscayne Park. It's a slender climber that nests in palm fronds, ficus, dense vines and the hollows of old trees, and it travels at night along branches, power lines and fence tops. Once on the roof, it squeezes through gaps as small as a quarter, often at the junction of roof and wall, around plumbing vents or behind loose soffit panels.

Common signs are scratching in the ceiling between dusk and dawn, droppings in the attic or garage, chewed citrus or mango, and gnawed wiring. Our rodent control begins with finding every entry point, then uses traps and tamper-resistant bait stations placed away from children and pets, seals the openings and follows up until the attic is quiet.

Medians, swales and shared green space

The village's wide medians and grassy swales are part of its charm. They're also open ground that fire ants love, and after rain they can hold shallow water for a day or two. Homes facing a median often see fire ants move from the swale into the edge of the yard, along the driveway and up against the foundation.

We treat fire ant mounds on your property and ant nests in the yard around the home. We don't treat lawns, plants or shrubs, and we don't treat public medians, but keeping the band along your driveway and walkway clear makes it easier to spot new mounds early.

Ants in roots, mulch and kitchens

Under big trees, ants are everywhere. White-footed ants build huge colonies in palms, tree crowns and mulch and send long trails into kitchens and bathrooms. Florida carpenter ants forage at night and nest in damp, softened wood and hollow spaces. The little fire ant, a tiny ant with a painful sting, nests in trees and potted plants and can drop onto people working in the yard.

Spraying a visible trail usually splits the colony into several new ones. We use baits indoors that workers carry back to the nest, and we treat ant nests close to the home outdoors.

Mosquitoes in the shade

Biscayne Park's shade makes it a comfortable place for mosquitoes to rest during the day. They breed in birdbaths, flowerpot saucers, bromeliads, gutters clogged with leaves, tarps, buckets and toys left in the yard. The Asian tiger mosquito is the striped one that bites in daylight, and a single bromeliad can produce dozens of them.

Our mosquito control is a monthly service, and you can adjust the schedule. Using a backpack fogger, a technician treats the shaded leaves and hedges where mosquitoes spend the day, adds larvicide to water that can't be emptied, and walks the yard with you to find breeding spots. Before a backyard party, we can do an event spray. Our rainy-season mosquito guide has more tips.

Leaf litter and palmetto bugs

Fallen leaves pile up quickly under a canopy this thick, and leaf litter is exactly where the American cockroach lives. These big roaches also shelter in mulch, tree holes, woodpiles and storm drains. When it rains hard, they move inside through floor drains, under doors and through gaps around pipes.

Rake leaves away from the house, keep a foot or two of bare ground or gravel along the foundation, and keep gutters clean. We treat the perimeter, entry points and drains.

Older homes and their weak spots

Many Biscayne Park homes are decades old, with wood trim, original windows, porches and additions built over time. We pay attention to the seams where additions meet the original house, loose window frames, worn door sweeps, cracked stucco and gaps around old pipes and AC lines. Sealing these spots keeps out roaches, ants and rodents and makes every treatment last longer.

Wood, moisture and carpenter ants

In a village with a historic log cabin at its center and many homes with wood trim, decks and pergolas, damp wood is a common concern. Wood that stays wet from leaks, sprinklers or shade softens over time, and carpenter ants move in. Look for small piles of sawdust-like debris and large black or reddish ants indoors at night. Fix leaks, redirect sprinklers away from wood and replace rotted trim. We find and treat carpenter ant nests.

Fleas, ticks and wildlife

Raccoons, opossums and squirrels move freely through the canopy and yards. Wildlife resting under decks and sheds leaves behind cat fleas, which hitchhike inside on pets. Dogs that roam shady, brushy edges can also pick up ticks. We treat the home and outdoor resting areas, and each pet needs a vet-recommended flea product the same week.

Spiders and wasps in the trees

Webs strung between trees across sidewalks in late summer are usually orb weavers. The spiny orb weaver is small, with a hard, spiky body, and the golden silk orb weaver is large with a yellow web. Both are harmless. The brown widow hides in sheds, under patio furniture and in mailboxes. Paper wasps build under eaves and porch ceilings. We treat spider hiding spots and remove wasp nests around your home.

Occasional invaders after rain

Damp shade brings pillbugs and sowbugs, millipedes and springtails to the foundation, and after heavy rain they wander indoors under doors. They're harmless but annoying. Pulling mulch back, fixing leaks and adjusting sprinklers reduces them, and our perimeter treatment keeps most of them outside.

Fruit trees and gardens

Mango, avocado, citrus, banana and lychee trees are common here. Fallen fruit feeds rats and draws ants and fruit flies. Pick fruit as it ripens, clean up drops quickly and keep compost in a closed bin. We don't treat plants or trees, but we will tell you if a fruit tree is acting as a rat feeding station.

Kitchens, pantries and small flies

Pantry pests such as the red flour beetle come home in packaged food and spread to other dry goods. Drain flies breed in slow drains in older bathrooms. Store dry goods in airtight containers, toss anything infested and scrub slow drains with a brush and hot water.

German roaches and bed bugs

Even in a single-family village, the German cockroach can arrive in boxes, used appliances or secondhand furniture. It lives indoors and multiplies quickly, so we treat it with gel baits and growth regulator in kitchens and bathrooms, followed by a return visit. Bed bugs also travel in luggage and used furniture. Our bed bug treatment is a targeted treatment with follow-up visits.

Why neighbors matter here

Because the canopy connects one yard to the next, a rat problem on one property rarely stays there. The same goes for mosquitoes breeding in a neighbor's forgotten bucket or a fire ant colony that spans two yards. If several homes on your block are dealing with the same pest, it helps to talk with your neighbors about trimming shared trees, clearing standing water and sealing rooflines around the same time. We're glad to inspect multiple homes on a street if neighbors want to coordinate.

Pools, patios and outdoor living

Plenty of Biscayne Park homes have a pool, a screened patio or a backyard deck under the trees. Patio lights draw insects, and spiders follow. Leaves that blow into pool corners and gutters stay wet. Pool equipment pads and pump rooms are warm and shaded, which palmetto bugs and brown widows like. Skim leaves often, keep pool covers taut and check the equipment area when you're out there. We treat outdoor structures and equipment areas during regular service.

Sheds, garages and storage

Backyard sheds and garages collect boxes, tools, holiday decorations and lawn equipment. Clutter on the floor hides mice, palmetto bugs and spiders, and a worn garage door seal lets them in. Use lidded plastic bins, store items on shelves and replace door seals when they crack.

Storm season under the trees

After a tropical storm, Biscayne Park often has downed branches, piles of debris and standing water in swales and low yards. Debris piles shelter rats and roaches, standing water breeds mosquitoes within a week, fire ants raft and settle on dry ground, and storm damage can open new gaps in roofs and soffits. See our guides to post-flood pest control and rodents after a hurricane. After a storm, it's worth having us check your roofline for new entry points.

A year of pests in Biscayne Park

Spring brings ant swarms and the start of mosquito season. The rainy months from about May to October bring the most mosquitoes and palmetto bugs. Late summer and fall bring big orb weaver webs and storm debris. In the cooler, drier months, roof rats push harder to get into attics. Quarterly service keeps protection steady through all of it.

The pests we see most in Biscayne Park

Roof rats in the canopy, white-footed and carpenter ants, fire ants along medians and swales, mosquitoes resting in shade, palmetto bugs in leaf litter, fleas from wildlife, orb weavers and brown widows, and moisture pests after rain.
