What Is the Little Fire Ant?

Also called the electric ant, this tiny tropical ant has been in Miami since the 1920s. It's not a mound builder like the red imported fire ant. Instead it forms many small, scattered nests with multiple queens in shady, damp spots, and colonies easily move in potted plants and landscape materials. Because the ants climb into trees and fall onto people and pets below, stings often happen on the neck and shoulders.

How to Identify Them

They're so small and slow that people often don't notice them until they're stung. A magnifier shows a golden ant with two spines on the back of the thorax. Compare with the much larger red imported fire ant, which builds visible dirt mounds, and the ghost ant, which is pale and doesn't sting.

Life Cycle

Colonies have many queens and grow by "budding," where a group of workers and queens walks off to start a new nest nearby. Eggs become larvae that workers feed, then pupae, then new workers. Because there's no single central nest, colonies spread across a yard in many small pockets.

Look-alikes and How to Tell Them Apart

  • Red imported fire ant: larger workers of mixed sizes, builds dirt mounds in open sunny areas.
  • Ghost ant: pale legs and abdomen with a dark head, tends to trail indoors to sweets, doesn't sting.
  • Pharaoh ant: similar size and color but nests indoors in walls and cabinets and doesn't give that sharp sting.
  • Big-headed ant: some workers have oversized heads; leaves dirt along cracks and patio edges.

Where They Hide in South Florida Homes

Look on and around palms, fruit trees and potted plants, in mulch beds, under patio pavers and stepping stones, in leaf litter along fences and in stacked lumber or pots near the house. Indoors, they may show up in furniture and bedding near doors to the yard.

When to Call a Pro

Call if you or your family are getting stung around trees or the patio, if pets seem to be rubbing their eyes or getting stung, or if you see tiny orange ants trailing up the house. Because colonies are scattered, store-bought sprays usually miss most of them.

Signs of Little Fire Ants

  • Stings from "invisible" ants after brushing against a tree or palm
  • Trails of tiny orange ants on trunks, fences or pots
  • Dogs or cats rubbing at their eyes, or cloudy-looking eyes in outdoor pets (see a vet right away)
  • Ants inside clothing, beds or furniture near the patio

Is it dangerous?

  • Stings
  • Property damage

A painful sting that leaves itchy welts; stings to pets' eyes have been linked to eye damage.

Prevention Tips

  • Check the bottom of new potted plants before setting them by the house.
  • Keep mulch thin and pulled back from the foundation.
  • Clear leaf litter and stored boards next to the house.
  • Feed pets indoors or pick up outdoor food bowls.

How Pro-Spray Treats Little Fire Ants

We inspect the yard edges, patio, pots and foundation to find where the ants are trailing and nesting near the home, then use baits and targeted perimeter treatments labeled for ants, plus a yard treatment for ants around the home where needed. We don't treat trees, palms or landscape plants, so if the ants are heavily into tree canopies we'll tell you, and a licensed lawn and ornamental provider may need to handle that part. Quarterly service keeps pressure on scattered nests. Our Bug Free Guarantee: If pests come back between visits, so do we, at no extra cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are little fire ants dangerous to pets?
Their stings can hurt pets, and repeated stings to the eyes have been linked to eye problems. If your pet's eyes look cloudy or irritated, call your vet.
Why do I get stung under a tree?
Little fire ants forage in trees and fall onto people below, so stings often land on the neck and arms.
Are little fire ants the same as regular fire ants?
No. They're far smaller, don't build mounds and nest in scattered spots.
