What Is a Pharaoh Ant?

The Pharaoh ant is a tiny indoor ant that has spread worldwide, mainly through human travel and shipping. It is most known for being stubborn in apartments, condos, hotels and healthcare buildings, where its colonies spread through walls and between units.

How to Identify Them

Pharaoh ants are very small and yellowish, so they're easy to miss until they trail across a counter. They have two nodes between the thorax and abdomen, and the abdomen is often a bit darker. They move steadily in trails along edges, cords and pipes.

Common look-alikes:

  • Ghost ant: dark head and thorax with a pale abdomen.
  • Thief ant: similarly tiny and yellow; often requires a professional to tell apart.

Life Cycle and Habits

Colonies contain many queens and split by budding when stressed or when they grow too large. A disturbed colony can turn into many colonies scattered throughout a building. They nest in warm, protected voids, including inside walls, under floors, behind outlets and in stored items. They eat a wide range of foods, from sweets and grease to proteins.

Signs of an Infestation

  • Trails of tiny yellow ants along countertops, baseboards and plumbing
  • Ants in sugar, syrups, pet food or greasy surfaces
  • Ants in bathrooms around sinks and toilets
  • Ants spreading to new rooms after spraying
  • Activity reported in neighboring units

Is it dangerous?

  • Contamination

Contaminates food; known problem in healthcare and multi-unit buildings.

Why They Show Up in South Florida Homes

Pharaoh ants mostly live indoors and love warm, humid conditions. In condo towers and apartments, they can spread through shared walls and plumbing. They often arrive in boxes, groceries or belongings.

Prevention Tips

  • Store food in sealed containers and clean up spills quickly.
  • Seal gaps around pipes, outlets and baseboards.
  • Fix leaks and reduce moisture.
  • Avoid repellent sprays and wipes on trails.
  • Let building management know if neighbors have ants too.

How Pro-Spray Treats Pharaoh Ants

Baiting is the key. We place slow-acting baits along trails and in cracks where workers forage, so they carry it back to all the queens. Because sprays make colonies split, we avoid repellent products indoors. Follow-up visits check bait acceptance and adjust placements. In multi-unit buildings, results are best when neighboring units are treated too.

Pharaoh Ants in Multi-unit Buildings

Pharaoh ants are a classic shared-building problem. Colonies don't respect unit lines, and ants travel easily through plumbing chases, electrical conduits and the space behind cabinets. That's why one unit can be treated successfully and then see ants return from next door. If you live in a condo, townhouse or apartment, it helps to ask neighbors whether they've seen tiny yellow ants and to let your association or management know. When possible, coordinating treatment across connected units gives the best and longest-lasting results. We're happy to talk with your building manager about what we're seeing in your home.

Healthcare and Sensitive Settings

Pharaoh ants are well known in hospitals and care facilities because they're attracted to moisture and sweet liquids. At home, that means homes with a family member who uses medical supplies or feeding equipment should be extra careful about sealing and storage.
