Lauderdale-by-the-Sea is a small, walkable beach town known for its low-rise character, Anglin's Fishing Pier at the end of Commercial Boulevard and the reef close to shore. Homes range from older beach cottages and small apartment buildings to oceanfront condos and canal homes on the west side of A1A, and the little gated village of Sea Ranch Lakes sits right in the middle of town.

Salt air doesn't stop pests. Older cottages and small buildings have gaps where palmetto bugs and ants get in, condo units share plumbing that lets German roaches spread, and seasonal rentals with frequent guests and luggage can bring new pests in. Pro-Spray is a family-run, Licensed & Insured South Florida business. We treat beach homes and condos carefully, with methods chosen with families and pets in mind. Call or text 833-845-9284 for a FREE inspection and $50 off your first service.

Beach cottages and small walk-up buildings

Many of the older homes and small apartment buildings near the beach were built long before anyone worried about sealing every gap. Jalousie windows, wood doors that have swelled and shrunk for decades, open soffits and plumbing that runs through crawl spaces or slab cracks all give pests a way in. That's part of the charm, and it's also why a cottage can have palmetto bugs in the bathroom one night and an ant trail across the counter the next morning.

During the FREE inspection we look closely at doors, window frames, weep holes, utility lines and the spaces under sinks. We treat the outside where pests live, the gaps they use and the inside places they show up, and we tell you which repairs would help most. A new door sweep or a tube of sealant around a pipe often matters as much as the treatment itself.

Oceanfront and Intracoastal condos

Condo buildings along the beach and the canals have a different set of problems. German roaches and ants move through shared plumbing chases, trash chutes and the walls between units, and they ride in on grocery bags and delivery boxes. A roach problem in one unit is often a building problem that hasn't been noticed yet.

We treat individual units with gel baits and growth regulators in kitchens and bathrooms, the places German cockroaches actually live, and we follow up. If your association wants to talk about trash rooms, pool cabanas or other common areas, we're happy to.

Vacation rentals and seasonal homes

Lauderdale-by-the-Sea has a lot of vacation rentals, small motels and seasonal homes. Guests come and go with luggage, beach bags and coolers, and every turnover is a chance for something new to arrive. Bed bugs travel in suitcases. German roaches travel in boxes and groceries. And a unit that sits empty for the summer can have dry drains and quiet corners where palmetto bugs and ants settle in.

We can treat between guest stays, focusing on the kitchens and bathrooms where roaches show up first, and we know what to look for along mattress seams and headboards when a guest reports bites. Seasonal owners can book a visit before they leave and another when they return. See our bed bug treatment page for more.

Palmetto bugs from the drains

The large brown American cockroach is what most locals call a palmetto bug. In a beach town, they live in storm drains, sewer lines, palm trunks, mulch beds and the dense landscaping around buildings, and they come up through floor drains, tub drains and gaps under doors, especially after heavy rain or when the drains in an empty unit dry out. Running water in every drain once a week and keeping stoppers in overnight helps a lot. We treat the exterior, the entry points and the inside spots where they appear.

No-see-ums and coastal biting gnats

If you get bitten at dusk on a balcony or in the yard but never see what's biting, it's probably no-see-ums. These tiny biting midges breed in the wet sand and muck along the coast and the canals, and they're most active on calm evenings around dawn and dusk. They're small enough to pass through standard screens. Our backpack fogger treatment of shaded resting areas around the home can help, and fine-mesh screens and a ceiling or patio fan make a real difference, because no-see-ums are weak fliers.

Mosquito control in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea

Courtyards, potted plants, bromeliads, kayak hulls and canal edges hold enough water to keep mosquitoes around even near the beach. The Asian tiger mosquito breeds in containers as small as a bottle cap and bites during the day, so you'll notice it on the patio long before sunset. Our monthly service uses a backpack fogger on shaded resting spots like hedges, under decks and along fences, and we add larvicide to water that can't be dumped. The schedule is customizable, and we do one-time event sprays before a party or a family gathering. See mosquito control.

Ants in a sandy town

Sandy soil drains fast, which ants love. White-footed ants build huge colonies in palms and landscaping and trail inside along wires and window frames. Ghost ants show up at kitchen and bathroom sinks. Fire ants build mounds in sunny grass strips and along walkways. We use baits that ants carry back to the colony and treat fire ant mounds around the home one by one, so you're not just wiping up the trail you can see.

Roof rats on the canals

West of A1A, canal homes with docks, palms and fruit trees give roof rats everything they need: food, water and a route to the roof. They travel along seawalls and boat lifts at night and climb palms and power lines to reach soffits and attic vents. Scratching in the ceiling, droppings in the garage and gnawed fruit are the usual signs. We find the entry points, set traps and tamper-resistant bait stations out of reach of kids and pets, seal what we can and come back to check. More on our rodent control page.

Salt, sun and wear on the building

Coastal weather is hard on buildings. Salt air corrodes metal screens and door thresholds, sun dries out caulk and weatherstripping, and storms loosen soffit panels and vent covers. Every one of those small failures is a door for pests. When we inspect a beach home or condo, we look at the condition of screens, weatherstripping and vents along with the pests themselves, and we point out what needs repair. A few small fixes often make the biggest difference between treatments.

After a storm on the coast

After tropical storms and heavy rain, low streets near the canals can flood. Palmetto bugs move up from flooded drains, fire ants float in clumps and look for dry ground, rodents move indoors, and mosquitoes hatch about a week later from every container and low spot that filled. Our guides to post-flood pest control and rodents after a hurricane explain what to watch for and when to call.

Fishing gear, bait and the garage

A lot of residents here fish, whether from Anglin's Fishing Pier, a kayak or a boat on the canal. Coolers, bait buckets, tackle boxes and nets that go into the garage still smelling of fish draw house flies, palmetto bugs and ants within hours. Rinse coolers and bait buckets right away, keep them upside down so they dry, and store bait in a sealed freezer instead of an open fridge in the garage. Fish scraps belong in a sealed bag in an outdoor can with a tight lid, not in the kitchen trash overnight. These habits keep the garage from becoming the place where pests stage before moving into the house.

Lovebugs, beach gear and A1A

Twice a year, lovebugs drift across A1A in pairs, usually in late April into May and again in late August into September. They don't bite or sting, and spraying a passing flight isn't practical, but they splatter windshields, stick to freshly painted walls and gather on light-colored surfaces. Washing cars and white walls promptly during the flights keeps the acidic residue from staining. It's one of the few bugs in town where the best advice really is to wait it out.

Shops and restaurants near the pier

The few blocks around the pier are packed with restaurants, cafés and small shops. Grease traps, dumpsters, deliveries and outdoor dining all attract roaches, flies and rodents, and those pests move into the cottages and condos nearby. If you run a business in town, our commercial pest control service handles kitchens, storage rooms and dumpster areas on a schedule that fits around your hours.
