Post-Flood Pest Control in South Florida
Family-run, licensed and insured pest control in South Florida.
$50 OFF your first service + FREE inspectionNew customers · No code needed · No expirationIn South Florida, it doesn't take a hurricane to flood a street. A slow-moving tropical system, a king tide or one afternoon of heavy rain can put water in yards, garages and drains. When the water comes up, pests that live in the ground, the sewers and the landscaping get pushed out, and many of them head straight for the nearest dry, sheltered spot: your home. Here's what to expect after a flood and what to do about it.
Fire Ants and Other Ants
Fire ants float out of flooded soil as rafts and set up new mounds on high ground, often right against the foundation, the driveway and the pool deck. Ghost ants, white-footed ants and other nuisance ants move indoors to escape wet nests, trailing along baseboards and into kitchens and bathrooms.
What to do: watch for rafts and new mounds, wear gloves and boots during cleanup, and keep food sealed. See our full guide to floating fire ants after flooding.
Palmetto Bugs and Other Roaches
Rising water in sewers, storm drains and yard drains flushes out American cockroaches, the big roaches we call palmetto bugs. They come up through floor drains, shower drains and gaps around plumbing, and they crawl in under doors. Smokybrown cockroaches get pushed out of soaked mulch and leaf litter.
What to do: run water in unused drains, use drain covers or stoppers at night, and seal gaps around pipes. Learn how to tell them apart in our palmetto bug (American cockroach) guide.
Mosquitoes
Standing water is where mosquitoes breed. A week or so after a flood, many South Florida yards see a big jump in bites. The container-breeding mosquitoes that bite during the day lay eggs just above the waterline in buckets, plant saucers, tarps, clogged gutters and storm debris, and those eggs hatch once the water rises.
What to do: after the storm, dump and scrub anything holding water, clear gutters and flatten or store tarps. Our mosquito breeding sites checklist walks through the spots people miss. For ongoing protection we recommend monthly mosquito control, especially in rainy season, on a schedule you can customize.
Rats and Mice
Flooding drives Norway rats out of burrows, canal banks and storm drains, and storms push roof rats out of damaged trees. Both look for dry shelter and food, which often means garages, sheds, attics and wall voids.
What to do: check the outside of your home for new gaps, keep food and pet food sealed, and listen for noises at night. Our page on rodents after a hurricane covers the storm damage rats use to get in.
Other Pests That Show Up After Rain
You may also notice more spiders, millipedes, earwigs and crickets moving onto patios and into garages. Most are a nuisance and drop off as things dry out. If they keep coming inside, a perimeter treatment helps.
Post-Flood Cleanup Tips That Cut Down on Pests
- Dry it out. Pests follow moisture. Get wet carpet, boxes and cardboard out of the house and garage quickly.
- Clear debris away from the house. Branches, wet leaves and stacked materials are new homes for roaches, ants and rodents.
- Dump standing water every few days until the yard dries.
- Seal food and trash. Use tight lids and keep garbage cans clean.
- Check entry points. Look at door sweeps, weep holes, soffits and vents for new gaps.
- Protect yourself. Wear gloves and boots in floodwater and debris, and watch for ants.
