Hollywood stretches from the sand on A1A all the way west past I-75, and the pest problems change as you move inland. A beachside condo, a 1920s Spanish-style house in Hollywood Lakes, a ranch home in Emerald Hills and a newer townhome off Sheridan Street each give pests a different set of doors. Below is how we approach each part of the city, what we see most often, and how our service actually works.
Hollywood Beach and the Broadwalk: salt air, shared walls and outdoor dining
Between the ocean and the Intracoastal, most people live in condos, rentals, small motels turned apartments and older beach cottages packed close together. Restaurants and cafés line the Broadwalk, and their dumpsters, grease traps and delivery doors attract American cockroaches and rats that don't stay put. When one building gets busy with roaches, the building next door hears about it within weeks.
Inside a condo, German cockroaches are the problem we're called about most. They hitchhike in grocery bags and boxes, then settle behind refrigerators, inside cabinet hinges and around the dishwasher. In a building, they travel through plumbing chases and electrical runs, so we treat your unit with gel baits and growth regulators where they hide, and we look for the gaps around pipes under the sink and behind the toilet that connect your unit to the neighbors'. If your association wants the trash rooms and common areas handled too, we can set that up as commercial service.
Near the dunes and the beach, spiders build webs under balconies and around outdoor lights, and ghost ants trail along window frames looking for sugar and moisture. Coastal homes also get no-see-ums on still evenings, which are tiny biting midges that come through ordinary window screens. We can't treat the beach or the dune, but we can make your own patio and entryways less welcoming.
Hollywood Lakes and Downtown: character homes with more ways in
Hollywood was laid out in the 1920s, and the neighborhoods closest to Young Circle and the Intracoastal still have plenty of homes from that era and the decades after. We love working in them. They also have the most entry points: original wood windows, gaps where the slab meets the stucco, settled door thresholds, attic gable vents, clay tile roofs and plumbing that's been redone a few times.
Roof rats are the big story here. Hollywood Lakes has mature trees, palms and fruit trees close to rooflines, and the canals give rats an easy travel route at night. When rats get into an attic, people usually hear them first, around dusk or in the early morning. Our rodent service starts with an inspection of the roofline, soffits, vents and AC line openings, then we trap, seal the openings we find and come back to check. Sealing matters more than anything else, because a trapped rat is replaced quickly if the hole stays open.
Downtown, around Hollywood Blvd, Harrison Street and the area near ArtsPark at Young Circle, there are apartments above shops, restaurants and older multi-family buildings. For businesses there, we offer commercial pest control focused on kitchens, storage rooms, dumpster pads and back doors. For tenants and landlords in older apartments, we focus on German cockroaches and the shared walls that let them move.
Emerald Hills and Hollywood Hills: big trees, golf course edges and roof rats
Emerald Hills is known for winding streets, large lots and big shade trees, with homes set along the golf course and the lakes. Hollywood Hills, north of Hollywood Blvd and west of the downtown area, has a mix of mid-century ranch homes and larger lots with a lot of mature landscaping. In both neighborhoods, the calls we get most are roof rats, palmetto bugs and ants.
Large canopies and dense hedges keep the ground cool and damp, which American cockroaches love. They live outside in mulch beds, tree holes, sewers and irrigation boxes, then come inside when heavy rain floods them out or when the weather turns dry. A perimeter treatment around the foundation, entry doors, garage and weep holes cuts down how many of them reach the house. We also look for door sweeps that have worn through and gaps around the garage door, since those are where most palmetto bugs come in.
Yards backing up to the golf course and the lakes also see more mosquitoes and fire ant mounds. We treat fire ant mounds and do yard treatments for fleas and ants around the home, so the kids and the dog can use the backyard again. We don't treat turf for lawn pests or do plant care.
TY Park, Hollywood's west side and the newer neighborhoods
Topeekeegee Yugweekee Park, which most of us just call TY Park, sits in the middle of Hollywood's west side, with its big lake, shady picnic areas and trails. The neighborhoods around it and further west, toward Pembroke Pines and Davie, have more single-family homes and townhomes built from the 1970s on, many with lakes, canals and drainage swales behind them.
Out here, mosquitoes and ants are the steady complaint. Homes with pool cages get spiders building on the screen and in the corners where lights attract insects at night. Townhome rows share walls and attics, so ants and roaches that start at one end can show up at the other. If you're in a townhome, we treat your unit and the perimeter you control, and we'll tell you honestly whether the pressure looks like it's coming from next door.
West of US-441 and out toward I-75, newer subdivisions have fresh sod, new mulch and young landscaping. Disturbed soil and new plantings bring big-headed ants and fire ants, and they often trail inside along the slab edge and under baseboards. We treat the colonies outside and the trails inside, instead of spraying the baseboards and calling it done.
The pests we treat most in Hollywood
- American cockroaches (palmetto bugs): big, reddish-brown roaches that live outside in mulch, drains and sewers, then come in during heavy rain. See our American cockroach guide.
- German cockroaches: small, tan roaches that breed indoors, mostly in kitchens and bathrooms. Common in condos and apartments. See the German cockroach page.
- Roof rats: climbers that use trees, palms, fences and power lines to get into attics. Common in Hollywood Lakes, Emerald Hills and older neighborhoods. Read about roof rats.
- Ants: ghost ants, big-headed ants, white-footed ants and fire ants, inside and out.
- Mosquitoes: especially from the start of the rainy season through fall. See the Asian tiger mosquito, a daytime biter that breeds in containers.
- No-see-ums: tiny biting midges near the beach and the Intracoastal. See no-see-ums.
- Spiders, fleas, ticks and bed bugs: we treat all of them, and bed bugs get their own plan.
Mosquito control for Hollywood homes
Hollywood has the Intracoastal, the canals off it, the lakes in Emerald Hills and TY Park, and a long rainy season. Still, most of the mosquitoes biting you on the patio hatched much closer to home: a clogged gutter, a plant saucer, a kid's toy, a tarp, a boat cover or the cups of a bromeliad. Container breeders like the Asian tiger mosquito can grow up in a bottle cap of water.
Our monthly mosquito service has two parts. First, your technician uses a backpack fogger to treat the shady places adult mosquitoes rest during the day: under decks, along fence lines, in dense hedges, behind the AC unit and around the pool cage. Second, we treat the breeding spots we find with larvicide so fewer mosquitoes hatch, and we show you what to dump or cover between visits. The schedule is customizable, so we can lean in during the wet months and adjust when things dry out.
Planning a birthday party, a wedding in the backyard or a get-together by the pool? We also do one-time event sprays a day or two before your event. Learn more on our Hollywood mosquito control page or read about why the rainy season brings more mosquitoes.
After storms and king tides
East Hollywood floods in heavy rain and during the highest tides of the year, and the west side has its own low spots. Standing water after a storm means more mosquitoes about a week later. It also pushes fire ants up out of the ground, where they can float in clumps, and it drives palmetto bugs and rats toward higher, drier places, often your house or garage. If you're dealing with any of that, see our pages on floating fire ants after flooding, rodents after a hurricane and post-flood pest control.
Hollywood businesses: restaurants, shops and offices
Hollywood Blvd, Young Circle, the Broadwalk and the shopping centers along State Road 7 and Sheridan Street are full of restaurants, salons, offices, small warehouses and medical practices. Each one has the same weak spots: back doors propped open for deliveries, dumpster pads that collect grease, floor drains, ceiling voids and storage rooms with cardboard stacked against the walls. German cockroaches and rodents use those to settle in, and a single sighting in front of customers can cost more than a year of service.
Our commercial visits are scheduled around your hours, so we can come before you open or after you close. After each visit we go over what we found and what we treated, so you know where things stand before an inspector or a landlord asks. We also point out what your staff can fix, like a door that doesn't close all the way or a drain that needs cleaning, because those small fixes make treatments last longer.
What you can do between visits
A few habits make a real difference in a Hollywood home. Keep mulch pulled back a few inches from the foundation and trim branches so they don't touch the roof. Empty plant saucers, buckets and toys after each rain, and check that gutters drain. Store pet food and birdseed in sealed bins, because rats and roaches find open bags fast. Inside, fix dripping faucets and AC condensate leaks, since roaches look for water before food. Replace door sweeps when you can see daylight under the door. None of this replaces treatment, but it means fewer pests trying to get in, and we're happy to point out the specific spots on your property during the inspection.
Short-term rentals and seasonal homes
Hollywood has a lot of vacation rentals near the beach and plenty of seasonal owners who close up for the summer. An empty home in August is an open invitation: drains dry out and let roaches and drain flies up from the pipes, ants move into a quiet kitchen, and rats find the attic without anyone hearing them. If you rent your place or leave for months at a time, a scheduled quarterly visit keeps an eye on things while you're gone, and a check between guests helps catch bed bugs or German cockroaches before a review mentions them.
How a Hollywood service visit works
- FREE inspection. We walk the outside of the home, check the attic access, garage, kitchen, bathrooms and any spot you've seen activity. In a condo, we look at the plumbing, the cabinets and the gaps you share with neighbors.
- A plan for your home. We explain what we found, what we'll treat and why, in English or Spanish. Hablamos español.
- Treatment inside and out. Baits and targeted products where pests hide indoors, a perimeter treatment outside, and attention to entry points.
- Follow-up. On a plan, we come back on schedule. Bug Free Guarantee: If pests come back between visits, so do we, at no extra cost.
There are no contracts and no cancellation fees, just a simple service agreement. Our quarterly general pest plan is $125 per quarter. Most people start with a one-time service using the $50 new-customer discount and decide from there.
