The Golden Glades Interchange, where I-95, Florida's Turnpike, US 441, State Road 9 and the Palmetto Expressway all meet, is one of the most famous tangles of ramps in the state. But Golden Glades is also a neighborhood, an unincorporated census-designated place in northern Miami-Dade with its own streets of single-family homes, duplexes, small apartment buildings and churches. Back in the 1920s it was a farming community, and part of the original area became part of the City of Miami Gardens when that city incorporated in 2003.
That mix of busy roads, older homes, drainage canals and green space around the interchange creates a very specific set of pest problems. Rats travel the highway shoulders, mosquitoes breed in retention ponds, and roaches move between closely spaced homes. Pro-Spray Pest Control is a family-run, licensed and insured company that serves Golden Glades and the surrounding neighborhoods near Norland and North Miami. Living next to the interchange
The ramps and shoulders around the Golden Glades Interchange cover a lot of ground, and much of it is grass, brush, drainage swales and retention ponds. That land isn't where people live, but it is where plenty of pests do. Highway right-of-way gives rats cover, gives mosquitoes standing water after every storm and gives fire ants open sunny ground to build mounds.
Homes on streets closest to the highway ramps tend to see this spill over first. When we inspect a house on one of those blocks, we spend extra time on the side facing the road: fence lines, sheds, stacked materials, utility boxes and the gap between the slab and the ground. Small changes there make a big difference.
Roof rats and Norway rats along the road corridors
Golden Glades sees both of South Florida's common rats. The roof rat is the climber. It lives in trees, palms and vines, runs along power lines and gets into attics through soffit gaps and roof vents. The Norway rat is heavier and stays low. It burrows along foundations, under slabs, beside canal banks and under debris piles, and it often comes up from drainage areas.
Highway corridors, canals and older neighborhoods give both species plenty of travel routes. Signs to watch for are droppings in the garage, gnawed wiring or fruit, burrows near the foundation, and scratching sounds at night, either overhead or inside the walls. Our rodent control starts with finding how they're getting in. We set traps and tamper-resistant bait stations where kids and pets can't reach, seal the openings, and come back to follow up.
Older homes from the postwar boom
Many Golden Glades houses were built in the 1950s and 1960s, often concrete block with flat or low-pitched roofs, jalousie windows, carports and backyard utility rooms. These homes are solid, but decades of settling and repairs leave small openings that pests love: cracks where the slab meets the wall, gaps around old plumbing and AC line penetrations, worn weatherstripping and loose screens.
Jalousie windows in particular are hard to seal tight, and small roaches and ants walk right through them. When we inspect an older home, we check every one of these spots and tell you which ones matter most. Simple fixes like new door sweeps, screen repair and caulking around pipes cut down on a lot of the pests we find inside.
German roaches in duplexes and small apartments
Golden Glades has many duplexes, triplexes and small apartment buildings. In buildings with shared walls, the German cockroach is the most common problem we see. It's a small, light-brown roach that lives indoors, breeds fast and moves between units along plumbing lines and electrical chases.
Spraying a single kitchen rarely solves it. We use gel bait and insect growth regulator in the cracks where they actually hide, like the hinges of cabinets, behind the stove and refrigerator, and under the sink. Then we come back to make sure the population is falling. If you're a landlord with several units, treating them together gets results faster and keeps the roaches from bouncing back and forth.
Palmetto bugs after rain
The big reddish-brown roach that flies is the American cockroach, often called the palmetto bug. It lives outdoors in storm drains, sewers, mulch and tree holes, and Golden Glades has plenty of storm drains along its streets and around the interchange. After heavy rain, palmetto bugs move up through floor drains and under doors.
Keep drain covers in place, especially in laundry rooms and old shower drains, and keep mulch a foot or so away from your walls. We treat the exterior perimeter, entry points and drains so fewer of them make it inside.
Retention ponds, canals and mosquitoes
Highway drainage in Golden Glades sends rainwater into ponds, swales and canals. That system keeps the roads clear, but it also holds water mosquitoes can use. Closer to home, mosquitoes breed in any container that holds water for a week: buckets, plant saucers, tarps, tires, old toys, bromeliads and clogged gutters. The southern house mosquito prefers dirtier water, like a forgotten bucket or a blocked drain, and bites at night.
Our mosquito control is a monthly service, and you can adjust the schedule. A technician uses a backpack fogger to treat the shady places where mosquitoes rest during the day, under shrubs, along fences and around patios. We apply larvicide where water can't be dumped and point out the containers that are causing trouble. If you're hosting a backyard party, we can do an event spray beforehand.
Fire ants in open yards
Many Golden Glades lots have open sunny yards, and the grassy areas around the interchange are full of open ground. That's exactly where the red imported fire ant builds its mounds, especially after rain loosens the soil. Fire ants sting in groups and are a real hazard to kids playing and to pets.
We treat fire ant mounds directly and treat ant nests in the yard around the home. We don't treat lawns, plants or shrubs, but we do take care of the mounds where people and pets walk. Indoors, ant trails along kitchens and bathrooms are often ghost ants or white-footed ants, and we use baits so the workers carry the treatment back to the colony.
Churches, small businesses and community spaces
Golden Glades has several churches, small shops, auto businesses and offices along its main roads. Commercial kitchens, fellowship halls and storage rooms tend to attract roaches, rodents and flies, and once those pests settle into a business, they easily spread to nearby homes. Our commercial pest control works around your schedule and focuses on kitchens, dumpsters, storage areas and entry points.
Flies around trash and dumpsters
Busy streets and multi-unit buildings mean lots of trash bins and dumpsters. In the heat, a bin left uncovered for a few days becomes a breeding site for the house fly. Rinse bins regularly, keep lids closed, and bag food waste tightly. We can treat around dumpster pads and building entrances where flies gather.
Fleas and stray animals
Stray cats, raccoons and opossums move through Golden Glades along canals and highway land. They carry the cat flea, and fleas drop eggs wherever animals rest, like under decks, in crawl spaces, sheds and shaded corners of the yard. Indoor pets bring them in from there. We treat the home and the outdoor resting areas, and we ask that every pet gets a vet-recommended flea product the same week so the problem doesn't come back.
Bed bugs in rentals and shared housing
Bed bugs travel in luggage, used furniture and moving boxes, and areas with many rentals and frequent move-ins tend to see more of them. Signs include small blood spots on sheets, tiny dark spots along mattress seams and bites in rows when you wake up. Our bed bug treatment is a targeted inspection and treatment of beds, furniture and cracks, with follow-up visits. If you're a landlord, checking neighboring units at the same time helps stop the spread.
Spiders and wasps under eaves and carports
Carports, eaves and porch lights are where spiders like to settle. Most are harmless house spiders and orb weavers, but the brown widow is common here under patio furniture, inside outdoor storage and in meter boxes. Paper wasps also build open nests under carport roofs and window awnings. We treat the spots where spiders hide and remove wasp nests around the house.
After storms and flooding
Golden Glades sits low in parts, and heavy rain can leave water standing in yards and swales for days. When that happens, fire ants float in rafts, rats move into garages and attics, palmetto bugs come up through drains, and mosquitoes hatch within a week. For more, see our guides to post-flood pest control and rodents after a hurricane.
Golden Glades pest calendar
Pest pressure here follows the weather more than the calendar, but some patterns repeat every year. From May through October, the rainy season brings the most mosquitoes and the most palmetto bugs coming up from drains. In late summer and fall, after the big storms, fire ant mounds pop up in new places and rats look for dry shelter. In the cooler, drier months, rodents move indoors more, and roaches in multi-unit buildings keep breeding year-round. A quarterly plan keeps protection in place through each of these shifts.
Keeping a Golden Glades home pest-resistant
A few habits go a long way here. Keep tree branches and vines trimmed back from the roof and power lines. Store firewood, lumber and building materials off the ground and away from the house. Seal gaps around pipes, AC lines and garage doors. Empty standing water every week. Store pet food in sealed bins and bring bowls in at night. And keep a clear strip between mulch or shrubs and your foundation so pests have fewer places to hide right next to your walls.
