Ghost ants, often called "sugar ants" in South Florida, get their name from how hard they are to see. Their light-colored legs and abdomen blend into countertops, so they can look like tiny floating dark specks. They're a tropical species and are very common in South Florida, where they nest both outdoors and inside homes.
How to Identify Them
Ghost ants are tiny, with a dark head and thorax and a milky, translucent abdomen. They move quickly and somewhat erratically when disturbed. Crushed ghost ants give off a faint smell some people describe as similar to rotten coconut, a trait they share with other ants in the same group.
Common look-alikes:
- Pharaoh ant: similar size, but yellowish-tan all over.
- White-footed ant: larger and dark all over, with pale foot tips.
- Rover ant: tiny and brown, without the see-through abdomen.
Life Cycle and Habits
Ghost ant colonies have multiple queens and spread through "budding," where a group of workers and a queen walk off to start a new nest nearby. That means one colony can quickly become several spread across your home, especially if it's disturbed.
Indoors, they nest in tiny spaces: wall voids, behind baseboards, between cabinets, inside potted plants and even in the folds of stored items. Outdoors they live under stones, in mulch, in plant pots and under loose bark. They prefer sweets, especially honeydew and sugary foods, but also eat proteins and dead insects. They're drawn to moisture.
Signs of an Infestation
- Trails of tiny ants on kitchen counters, around sinks or in bathrooms
- Ants appearing in sugar, fruit, pet food or drinks left out
- Ants around potted plants indoors
- Clusters near leaks, wet sponges or condensation
- New areas of activity after you've sprayed
Is it dangerous?
- Contamination
Contaminates food; nuisance; no sting.
Why They Show Up in South Florida Homes
Ghost ants are tropical and do well in our warmth and humidity. They easily come in from landscaping, potted plants and mulch beds, and once inside they can live entirely indoors. Condos and apartments with shared walls make it easy for colonies to move between units through plumbing and wiring openings.
Prevention Tips
- Keep counters free of crumbs and sticky residue, and rinse out recycling.
- Store sweets, cereal and pet food in sealed containers.
- Fix leaks and dry out sinks and sponges overnight.
- Check potted plants before bringing them inside.
- Don't use repellent sprays on trails; it causes colonies to split.
How Pro-Spray Treats Ghost Ants
The goal is to wipe out the colonies, not just the visible ants. We use slow-acting baits placed along trails indoors so workers carry them back to the nest, combined with non-repellent exterior treatments around the foundation and landscaping. We'll also identify moisture problems that are drawing them in. Expect activity to drop over a few weeks as baits work through the colony.
Ghost Ants in Condos and Kitchens
In condo buildings and apartments, ghost ants often travel along the same hidden paths as plumbing and wiring. You might see them in your kitchen one week and around the bathroom vanity the next, because the colony has many small nests rather than one central one. Pay attention to where trails disappear: under the backsplash, into a gap behind the dishwasher, or beneath a loose baseboard. Those spots tell us where to focus baits. Taking a quick phone photo of a trail before you wipe it up is helpful during your inspection.
