Opa-locka, in north Miami-Dade, is known for its Moorish Revival architecture, including its domed City Hall, and for the Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport. The city's Arabian Nights theme even shows up on the street signs, with names like Sharazad, Ali Baba, Aladdin and Sinbad. Housing includes older single-family homes, duplexes and apartment buildings, plus industrial and warehouse areas around the airport.

Older homes and multi-unit buildings give German roaches and palmetto bugs plenty of ways in, through plumbing gaps, door gaps and drains. Roof rats move through trees and along fences and power lines, and ants show up whenever the rain starts. Pro-Spray is a family-run, Licensed & Insured South Florida company. We treat with care for families and pets, focus on the real source of the problem and explain everything in English or Spanish. Call or text 833-845-9284 for a FREE inspection and $50 off your first service.

Older homes and their entry points

Many Opa-locka homes are decades old. Concrete block walls crack around windows and hose bibs, door frames settle and leave gaps at the bottom, window AC units leave openings at the frame, and plumbing under kitchen and bathroom sinks has often been repaired with holes left around the pipes. None of that means a house is dirty. It just means pests have more ways in.

During the FREE inspection we check door sweeps, window units, plumbing penetrations, the water heater area, attic vents and the yard along the foundation. We treat the places pests live and the routes they use, and we point out simple fixes that make a big difference: a new door sweep, a screen for a vent, a bit of sealant or steel wool around a pipe.

Duplexes and apartments

Opa-locka has a lot of duplexes and small apartment buildings. In shared-wall buildings, German cockroaches move from unit to unit through plumbing walls and electrical outlets, so treating one side alone often just pushes them next door for a while. When we can, we treat both sides of a duplex or several units in a building together, which gives everyone better results.

For German roaches, we use gel baits and growth regulators in kitchens and bathrooms, where they actually live: behind appliances, in cabinet hinges, under sinks and around the water heater. We come back to follow up. Store-bought sprays and foggers tend to scatter roaches deeper into the walls, so it's best to stop using them once treatment starts.

Landlords and tenants

Many homes and units in Opa-locka are rentals. Owners can call us to treat between tenants, when units are empty and every cabinet is easy to reach, or to set up regular service for occupied units. Tenants can call us directly for their own unit, and we'll explain what we found so it can be shared with the landlord. We're glad to work with both.

Palmetto bugs from drains and sewers

The large brown American cockroach, the palmetto bug, lives in sewers, storm drains, mulch and tree holes. In older homes, it comes up through floor drains, tub drains and cracked pipes, and through gaps under doors, especially after heavy rain. Keep drain stoppers in at night, run water in unused drains weekly and keep garbage cans sealed. We treat the exterior around the foundation, the gaps they use and the inside spots where they appear.

Roof rats along fences and power lines

Roof rats are excellent climbers. In Opa-locka, they move along fences, power lines and tree limbs, and they get into attics through gaps at the soffits, roof vents and AC line openings. Fruit trees, pet food left outside and uncovered trash give them food. Norway rats dig burrows under sheds, slabs and along fences, and house mice get into kitchens and storage rooms.

Our rodent service finds how they're getting in, uses traps and tamper-resistant bait stations placed where kids and pets can't reach them, seals the openings we find and follows up. Keep trash cans closed, pick up fallen fruit, bring pet food in at night and trim branches back from the roof. See rodent control.

Ants when the rain starts

When the rainy season begins, ants head indoors. White-footed ants trail along baseboards and countertops by the thousands. Ghost ants appear at sinks. Fire ants build mounds in yards and along sidewalks, and little fire ants, which have been in Miami since the 1920s, can nest in trees and potted plants and sting when you brush against them. We use baits that ants carry back to the colony, treat fire ant mounds around the home one by one and treat the yard areas around the house where ants nest.

Mosquito control in Opa-locka

Containers, gutters, tires, buckets and low spots fill quickly after summer storms. The Asian tiger mosquito breeds in small containers and bites during the day, and the southern house mosquito breeds in dirtier standing water and bites at night. Our monthly service uses a backpack fogger on the shaded resting areas around the home, and we put larvicide in water that can't be dumped. The schedule is customizable, and we do one-time event sprays before a birthday party or family gathering. See mosquito control.

Homes near the airport and industrial areas

The areas around the Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport include warehouses, hangars, auto shops and industrial businesses. Loading docks, pallets and stored goods attract rodents and roaches, and those pests move into nearby neighborhoods. For businesses, our commercial pest control service covers warehouses, offices, break rooms and shops on a regular schedule.

Bed bugs

Bed bugs can show up anywhere people sleep, especially in buildings with frequent move-ins and in homes with secondhand mattresses or furniture. Look for small rust-colored spots on sheets and mattress seams and bites in lines or clusters. Don't throw the mattress out or move it to another room before calling, because that can spread them through the building. See bed bug treatment.

Fleas, pets and stray animals

Stray cats, raccoons and opossums are common in many neighborhoods, and they leave cat fleas behind in shady spots under porches, carports and sheds. Pets carry fleas indoors. We treat inside the home and the shaded yard areas where fleas develop, and pets need a vet-approved flea product at the same time.

Flat roofs, parapets and Moorish details

Opa-locka's Moorish Revival buildings and many of its later homes have flat or low-slope roofs with parapet walls, decorative domes and arches. They're a big part of the city's character, and they come with pest quirks. Flat roofs and clogged scuppers can hold rainwater for days, which breeds mosquitoes right above your head. Gaps where a parapet meets the roof deck, or where decorative trim has pulled away, give roof rats and roaches a way into the space between the ceiling and the roof. If you have a flat roof, keep the drains and scuppers clear, and let us know if you hear activity overhead so we can check the roofline closely.

Rats in cars, sheds and backyard workshops

Rodents don't only get into houses. Rats and mice nest in sheds, backyard workshops and under cars that sit for a while, and they chew wiring in engines, which can be an expensive repair. If a car is parked for long periods, open the hood now and then to check for nesting material, and keep pet food, bird seed and trash away from the driveway. We include sheds and outbuildings in the inspection and place bait stations where they'll do the most good, always out of reach of kids and pets.

Spiders and widows in storage areas

Sheds, carports and the space behind stored furniture are home to spiders, including brown widows, which are common in South Florida. Look for their spiky, round egg sacs under outdoor furniture, in buckets and around utility boxes, and wear gloves when moving things that have been sitting. Most bites happen when someone reaches into a spot without looking. Our general pest service treats the areas where spiders hide.

Food storage and trash

Most roach and rodent problems come down to food, water and shelter. Simple habits help a lot: store food in sealed containers, don't leave dishes or pet food out overnight, take kitchen trash out every night and keep outdoor cans tightly closed. Fix dripping faucets and AC condensation lines, since roaches need water every day. These steps make treatment work faster and last longer. Cardboard boxes stored in kitchens and closets are another favorite hiding spot for roaches, so recycle them instead of keeping them.

After storms and flooding

Some low parts of north Miami-Dade flood after heavy summer storms. When water rises, fire ants float in clumps, palmetto bugs come up from drains, rodents move into homes and sheds, and mosquitoes hatch about a week later. Our guides to post-flood pest control and floating fire ants after flooding explain what to watch for.

What we see most

German roaches in duplexes and apartments, palmetto bugs from drains, roof rats and Norway rats, white-footed and fire ants, mosquitoes after storms, fleas from stray animals and, occasionally, bed bugs.
