What Is a House Mouse?

The house mouse is the small rodent most people picture when they hear "mice in the house." It lives closely alongside people and can survive almost entirely indoors, feeding on crumbs, pet food and pantry goods. In South Florida, homes may see mice in garages, utility rooms and kitchens, especially near fields, construction or vacant lots.

How to Identify Them

Mice are much smaller than rats, with proportionally large ears and a tail about as long as the body. Droppings are tiny, about 1/4 inch, and pointed. A strong musky smell is common in heavier infestations.

Common look-alikes:

  • Young roof rat: bigger head and feet; droppings larger. See our roof rat guide.

Life Cycle and Habits

House mice breed quickly and throughout the year indoors. They nest in soft materials like insulation, paper, fabric and cardboard close to food. They're curious, explore new objects, and can squeeze through very small gaps.

They prefer grains and seeds but eat almost anything. They don't need much water and can get moisture from food.

Signs of an Infestation

  • Small dark droppings in drawers, cabinets, pantries and along walls
  • Chewed food packaging
  • Shredded paper or insulation nests
  • Scratching in walls or cabinets at night
  • A musky odor

Is it dangerous?

  • Property damage
  • Contamination
  • Allergens

Contaminate food and surfaces, chew wiring and stored items, droppings and urine can aggravate allergies.

Why They Show Up in South Florida Homes

Homes near fields, nurseries, construction sites and wooded lots, along with garages with open doors, often see mice. They come in through gaps under garage doors, around pipes and A/C lines and weep holes.

Prevention Tips

  • Store pantry food in sealed containers.
  • Keep the garage door closed and install bottom seals.
  • Seal small gaps around pipes, lines and doors.
  • Reduce clutter and cardboard in storage.
  • Keep pet food in sealed bins.

How Pro-Spray Treats House Mice

We inspect for entry points and activity, place traps and tamper-resistant stations where mice travel, and recommend sealing work so new mice can't follow. We return to check and confirm activity is gone.

Mice in Garages, Pantries and Utility Rooms

In South Florida homes, mice most often settle in the garage first. Bags of grass seed, bird seed, dog food and stored cardboard boxes are hard for them to resist, and the gap under a worn garage door seal is all they need. From the garage they move into the laundry room, the pantry and the spaces behind kitchen appliances. Check the bottom of the garage door for daylight, look behind and under stored items for droppings and shredded paper, and move pet food into sealed bins. Inside the pantry, look for small holes chewed in cereal boxes and bags of rice or pasta. Throw away anything mice have gotten into.

Cleaning Up Safely

Wear gloves, spray droppings and nesting material with disinfectant, let it sit, then wipe it up and bag it. Avoid sweeping or vacuuming droppings dry. Wash hands well afterward and wash any bedding or fabric they've nested in.

Traps, Poisons and Kids or Pets

Store-bought poisons can be risky in homes with kids and pets, and a mouse that dies inside a wall can cause odor problems. We place devices thoughtfully, use tamper-resistant stations outdoors, and explain where everything is so your family stays safe.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if it's mice or rats?
Droppings are the easiest clue. Mouse droppings are tiny, while rat droppings are much larger.
Can mice fit through small holes?
Yes. They can squeeze through surprisingly small gaps, which is why sealing matters.
Are mice dangerous?
They can contaminate food and surfaces. Clean droppings with gloves and disinfectant rather than sweeping.
Why are mice in my garage?
Open doors, gaps under doors and stored food or seed attract them.
