A single road, State Road A1A, known here as the Hillsboro Mile, runs its full length. At the south end is the Hillsboro Inlet, and on the inlet's north side stands the Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse, first lit in 1907 and still a working light.
Along the Mile you'll find oceanfront condominiums, beachfront estates and homes with docks on the Intracoastal, all packed into a strip of land where the wind and the water never stop. That narrow setting creates pest problems you won't see a few miles inland. Pro-Spray Pest Control is family-run, licensed and insured, and we service condos, homes and associations along the Hillsboro Mile. Call or Text 833-845-9284 for a FREE inspection and $50 off your first service.
A barrier island only a few hundred feet wide
On a strip this narrow, almost every property is waterfront in one direction or the other. Sea spray drifts across the whole island. Sand blows into garages and entryways. Landscaping is dense and tropical, irrigated to survive salt and sun. And with only one road, pests that live along A1A's landscaped edges have an easy corridor running the entire length of town.
That combination means two things for pest control. Exterior seals wear out faster here, so entry points open up sooner. And because buildings sit close to dense plantings on both sides, pests always have shelter right next to the walls.
Life between the lighthouse and the Mile
The lighthouse at the south end has watched over this coast since 1907, and the inlet beside it is a mix of rock, sand, mangroves and moving water. Shorelines like this hold crabs, shorebirds and plenty of insects, and the dense greenery along the inlet edge gives rodents and mosquitoes cover close to the south-end buildings. Properties nearest the inlet benefit from extra attention along the waterside perimeter.
Oceanfront condominiums
Many residents of the Mile live in oceanfront condo buildings. In multifamily buildings, pests move through shared plumbing, trash chutes, electrical chases and garages. The German cockroach spreads unit to unit in kitchens and bathrooms. The ghost ant, tiny and nearly transparent, nests inside walls and planters and shows up on upper floors. Palmetto bugs come up from garage drains and trash rooms.
For individual units, we use targeted gel baits and growth regulators in the cracks where roaches live, and ant baits that workers carry back to the colony. For associations, we set up regular service for common areas, including trash rooms, garages, lobbies, pool decks and mechanical rooms, so the whole building stays protected. See our commercial pest control page for building programs.
Estates on the ocean and the Intracoastal
Single-family homes on the Mile often include pools, cabanas, guest quarters, outdoor kitchens, docks and boat lifts. Each structure adds entry points and hiding places. Pool equipment rooms stay warm and humid. Docks collect stored gear. Dense hedges and palms run right up to the house.
We inspect every structure on the property and the landscaping that touches it, then focus treatment on the entry points and resting areas that matter most. We don't treat lawns, plants or shrubs, but we do treat ant nests in the yard around the home and any fire ant mounds.
Salt air and worn seals
Salt is hard on buildings. Door sweeps crack, weatherstripping shrinks, screen mesh corrodes, and caulk pulls away from frames much faster here than inland. Each of those small failures is an invitation to ants, roaches, spiders and the occasional rodent. During every inspection we check the condition of seals on beach-facing doors, garage doors and sliding glass doors, and we'll point out which ones need replacing.
Roof rats in coconut palms and sea grape
Coconut palms, royal palms and thick sea grape hedges line much of the Hillsboro Mile. They give the roof rat everything it needs: food from palm fruit and seeds, shelter high off the ground and branches that lead to rooftops and balconies. Roof rats get into attics, garages and ground-floor storage, and in condo buildings, into trash rooms and mechanical spaces.
Our rodent control begins with finding every entry point. We place traps and tamper-resistant bait stations where children and pets can't reach them, seal openings and follow up until activity stops. Trimming palm skirts and keeping hedges back from the building cuts their access.
Intracoastal shoreline: no-see-ums and mosquitoes
On the Intracoastal side, the calm water, seawalls and mangrove fringes breed no-see-ums, tiny biting gnats that come out at dawn and dusk and pass through standard screens. They're worst on still, humid evenings and can make a dock or pool deck miserable. Fans on lanais and patios help, since no-see-ums struggle to fly in any breeze.
Mosquitoes, meanwhile, breed in fresh water close to home: planters, saucers, bromeliads, boat covers, gutters, decorative fountains and AC drip lines. The Asian tiger mosquito bites during the day around pools and patios. Our mosquito control is a monthly service on a schedule you can customize, using a backpack fogger in the shaded landscaping where mosquitoes rest and larvicide in water that can't be dumped. We also do event sprays before gatherings, and associations can ask about our HOA mosquito control program.
Ants on pool decks and balconies
Beyond ghost ants indoors, coastal properties attract the Caribbean crazy ant, which moves fast and erratically and can build huge populations around pool decks, planters and electrical boxes. White-footed ants nest in palms and hedges and trail up walls onto balconies. Big-headed ants leave little piles of sand between pavers.
Baits work better than sprays for all of these, because sprays break colonies apart. We place bait where ants are actively foraging and treat nests close to the home.
Palmetto bugs from drains and garages
The American cockroach lives in storm drains, sewer lines, palm trees and garages. On the Mile, it often enters condos through garage and trash room drains and single-family homes through floor drains and garage doors. Keep drain covers in place, run water in unused drains and seal gaps under doors. We treat garages, drains, perimeters and entry points.
Seasonal owners and quiet homes
Many owners on the Mile spend part of the year elsewhere. A closed unit or house is a quiet place for pests to settle: roaches come up through drains that have dried out, ants move into kitchens, and spiders build in corners. Before you leave, clear open food from pantries, put covers on drains, and schedule service if one is coming due. When you return, let us know if anything looks different and we'll come take a look.
Boats, docks and the inlet
The Hillsboro Inlet is one of the busiest boating passages in the area, and plenty of residents keep boats at their docks. Boat covers that sag collect rainwater and breed mosquitoes. Cushions, life jackets and tackle stored on docks and in dock boxes shelter spiders and roaches. Rats will explore boats moored near palms and seawalls. Keep covers tight, store gear dry and check bags before bringing them inside.
Spiders and wasps around the water
Lights on docks, balconies and patios attract insects, and spiders follow. Most are harmless, but the brown widow is common in pool equipment areas, under patio furniture and in dock boxes. Paper wasps and red paper wasps build open nests under eaves, balcony ceilings and lanai frames. We treat spider hiding spots and remove wasp nests around the home.
Flies, trash rooms and outdoor kitchens
Condo trash rooms and outdoor kitchens attract house flies, and slow drains breed drain flies. Keep trash room doors closed and floors clean, rinse bins regularly and scrub slow drains. We treat trash areas and building entrances.
Bed bugs in buildings with seasonal turnover
Seasonal residents, guests and rentals increase the chance of bed bugs arriving in luggage. Look for small dark spots on mattress seams and bites in a line. Our bed bug treatment is targeted and includes follow-up visits. In condo buildings, checking adjacent units helps prevent spread.
Turtle-friendly lighting and night insects
Broward's beaches are sea turtle nesting grounds, and beachfront properties along the Mile follow lighting rules during nesting season that call for shielded, low, long-wavelength lights. That's good news for pest control too. Bright white and blue-tinted lights pull in moths, beetles and gnats, and spiders and geckos gather to feed on them. Amber or warm, shielded fixtures attract far fewer insects. If you're replacing balcony or patio lights, a turtle-friendly fixture usually means fewer bugs at your door.
Pantries in part-time homes
Dry goods that sit in a cupboard for months while owners are away are a common starting point for pantry pests. Sawtoothed grain beetles and cigarette beetles move from an old box of crackers or a bag of rice into everything nearby. Before leaving for the season, use up or toss open packages and move what's left into airtight containers. When you return, check cereal, flour, spices and pet food before using them.
Guests, family visits and the holidays
The busiest times on the Mile are often the winter months and holidays, when family and guests come to stay. More people means more food, more trash and more luggage coming and going. Empty trash daily when the house is full, keep food sealed and check guest beds after visitors leave. A service visit before the season starts is a good way to begin it pest-free.
Storms on a narrow island
With the ocean on one side and the Intracoastal on the other, Hillsboro Beach takes the full force of tropical storms. After high water, fire ants float and settle on dry ground, rats move into garages and buildings, palmetto bugs come up through drains, and mosquitoes hatch in standing water. Debris and damaged screens open new routes inside. See our guides to post-flood pest control and rodents after a hurricane.
Moisture pests and sprinkler overspray
Irrigation keeps island landscaping alive, but it also keeps foundations damp. Springtails and pillbugs collect along wet walls and wander into ground-floor units and garages. Adjust sprinkler heads away from walls and pull mulch back from the foundation. We treat the perimeter where they gather.
