This is one of the most common pantry beetles in homes. It can't chew into whole kernels, so it feeds on processed and broken foods. Adults are flat enough to squeeze through tiny gaps in folded packages, and they can live for months, so one infested box can spread to everything nearby.
How to Identify Them
Under a magnifier you'll see six saw-like teeth on each side of the segment behind the head. They're thinner and flatter than drugstore beetles, which are round and humped, and they lack the snout of the rice weevil.
The South Florida Season
These beetles breed year-round in heated or air-conditioned homes, and warm, humid weather helps them develop faster. Bulk purchases from warehouse stores, pet food bags in the garage and birdseed kept for feeders are common starting points in local homes.
Life Cycle
Females lay eggs in or near food, often in cracks of packages. The slender larvae crawl freely through the food, then build small cocoons of food particles to pupate. Adults can live for months and lay eggs over a long period, which is why a single box can keep a pantry infested for a long time.
Look-alikes and How to Tell Them Apart
- Drugstore beetle: rounder and humped, with the head tucked under.
- Rice weevil: has a long snout and develops inside whole kernels.
- Red and confused flour beetles: reddish-brown and shiny, without saw-like teeth on the sides.
- Merchant grain beetle: a very close look-alike; treatment is the same.
Where They Hide in South Florida Homes
In cereal, oats, rice, flour, pasta, dried fruit, nuts, chocolate, pet food and bird seed; in shelf corners and cracks; under shelf liners; and in gaps behind pantry cabinets where crumbs collect.
When to Call a Pro
Call if beetles keep coming back after you've thrown out infested food and cleaned shelves, or if they're turning up in several cabinets. There may be a hidden source, such as pet food or bird seed stored elsewhere.
Signs of Sawtoothed Grain Beetles
- Tiny brown beetles crawling in or around food packages
- Beetles on pantry shelves or kitchen counters
- Slender, pale larvae and dusty debris in grains and cereals
Is it dangerous?
- Contamination
Contaminates stored food; spreads from package to package.
Prevention Tips
- Store dry goods in airtight glass or hard plastic containers.
- Buy smaller amounts and use older packages first.
- Freeze new flour, rice or bird seed for a few days if you've had problems.
- Vacuum crumbs from shelf corners and cracks.
