What Is the Red Flour Beetle?
Red flour beetles are among the most common pests of stored grain products worldwide. They feed on flour and broken grains rather than whole kernels. Heavy infestations can give flour a grayish tint and a bad smell from chemicals the beetles release, and adults can fly, which helps them spread.
How to Identify Them
Look for a small, flat, shiny reddish beetle. The tip of each antenna ends in a three-segment club. The confused flour beetle looks almost the same; treatment is identical.
The South Florida Season
Flour beetles are active year-round indoors here, because our kitchens stay warm in every month. Problems often show up after holiday baking, when large bags of flour and mixes sit open for weeks, or when bulk pet food is stored in the garage, where heat speeds up their development.
Life Cycle
Females lay eggs loose in flour and similar products. The slender yellowish larvae feed and grow, then pupate right in the food, and adults can live for many months. Warm temperatures speed up every stage, so kitchens without steady AC can see quick buildups.
Look-alikes and How to Tell Them Apart
- Confused flour beetle: nearly identical; antennae widen gradually instead of ending in a sharp three-segment club.
- Sawtoothed grain beetle: narrower, with saw-like teeth on the sides of the thorax.
- Drugstore beetle: rounder and humped, with the head tucked under.
- Rice weevil: has a long snout.
Where They Hide in South Florida Homes
In flour, cake and pancake mixes, cereal, crackers, spices, pet food and bird seed; in cracks and corners of pantry shelves; under appliances where flour spills collect; and in old, forgotten baking supplies.
When to Call a Pro
Call if beetles keep returning after you've removed the infested products and cleaned, or if you find them in several places around the kitchen. We'll help track down the source and treat the cracks and crevices they hide in.
