Sea Ranch Lakes is one of the smallest villages in Broward County, a guard-gated residential community on A1A that's surrounded by the Town of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. Inside the gate, single-family homes are arranged around two freshwater lakes, and residents share a private beach club on the ocean side. It's quiet, green and close-knit, with lake views from many backyards and the Atlantic just across the road.

That combination of freshwater lakes and salt air is unusual, and it gives Sea Ranch Lakes a pest profile that blends lakefront and beachfront problems. Mosquitoes and midges come off the lakes, roof rats live in the palms, ants thrive in irrigated landscaping and salt wears down every seal on the house. Pro-Spray Pest Control is family-run, licensed and insured, and we serve homes inside the village. Call or Text 833-845-9284 for a FREE inspection and $50 off your first service.

Gate and access instructions

Sea Ranch Lakes is a guard-gated village, and every household knows its own entry routine best. When you book, please share any gate or access instructions you'd like us to have, such as how guests are announced or which entrance to use, so the first visit starts smoothly for you and for everyone at the gate.

Freshwater lakes behind the house

Two lakes sit at the heart of the village, and many homes back right onto the water. Lake banks, the plants along the edge and the shaded side yards between houses are where mosquitoes rest during the day. Still water close to the edge, especially among vegetation, can also produce swarms of non-biting midges in warm months. Midges don't bite, but they collect by the thousands on screens, lanais and lit windows.

We treat the shaded resting areas near the lake side of your property and the entry points around lanais and doors. We don't treat the lakes themselves. Switching outdoor lights to warm, shielded bulbs and keeping them off when you're not using the patio cuts down on the midges and other night fliers that gather at your door.

Mosquitoes between the lake and the beach

Most backyard mosquitoes come from small pockets of fresh water rather than the lakes. Bromeliads, birdbaths, planters and saucers, kids' toys, pool covers, clogged gutters and AC condensate lines all hold water long enough to breed them. The Asian tiger mosquito is black with white stripes and bites in the daytime, often around ankles on a pool deck. The gallinipper, a very large mosquito, can show up after heavy summer rains.

Our mosquito control is monthly, and you can customize the schedule. A technician uses a backpack fogger in the shaded plantings where mosquitoes rest, applies larvicide to water that can't be emptied and shows you the containers that are breeding them. We also offer event sprays before parties. If the village or a group of neighbors wants to coordinate, see our HOA mosquito control program.

Roof rats in palms and hedges

Tall palms and thick hedges give Sea Ranch Lakes its tropical look, and they're also home to the roof rat. This agile climber nests in palm skirts and dense shrubs, travels along branches, fences and wires, and gets into attics and garages through gaps along the roofline, loose soffit vents and openings around AC lines. Lakeside yards add another draw, since rats forage along the water's edge at night.

Our rodent control starts with a full roofline and ground-level inspection. We use traps and tamper-resistant bait stations placed out of reach of kids and pets, seal entry points and come back to make sure activity has stopped. Keeping palms trimmed and hedges clear of the roof is the best long-term prevention.

Ants in irrigated landscaping

Well-watered lawns, mulch beds and planters make ideal ant habitat. White-footed ants nest in palms and landscaping and run long trails into kitchens and bathrooms. Ghost ants nest in potted plants and wall voids. Big-headed ants push up small piles of soil along walkways and pool decks, and fire ants build mounds along lake banks and sunny edges.

We use baits indoors so workers carry the treatment back to the colony instead of scattering it, and we treat fire ant mounds and ant nests in the yard around the home. We don't treat lawns, plants or shrubs.

Salt air on a lake village

Even though most homes face a lake rather than the ocean, the Atlantic is only steps away, and salt air reaches every house. It corrodes screens, cracks door sweeps, shrinks weatherstripping and loosens caulk. Those small failures let in ants, roaches and spiders. We check seals on every exterior door and sliding glass door during inspections and tell you which ones need attention.

Palmetto bugs from drains and mulch

The American cockroach, the big palmetto bug, lives outdoors in mulch, palms, storm drains and sewer lines. In heavy rain it moves up through floor drains, garage drains and gaps under doors. Keep drain covers in place, run water in drains you rarely use and keep mulch a foot or so away from the foundation. We treat the perimeter, drains and entry points.

Pool decks and lanais

Most Sea Ranch Lakes homes have a pool, a screened lanai or both. Lanai screens keep out mosquitoes when they're intact, but small tears and gaps at the base let in mosquitoes, no-see-ums and ants. Pool equipment pads are warm and shaded, which palmetto bugs and spiders love. Patio lights at night draw insects, and spiders follow them. We treat the lanai perimeter, the equipment area and the doors into the house.

Beach club days and no-see-ums

Trips to the beach club bring their own pests. On calm evenings along the coast, no-see-ums can be fierce. Sand and damp towels left in a garage or car attract springtails and moisture pests. Shake out beach bags, chairs and towels before bringing them inside, and let wet gear dry outdoors.

Spiders and wasps

The large, golden webs strung between palms in late summer belong to the golden silk orb weaver, which is harmless. The brown widow is more of a concern, hiding under outdoor furniture, in pool equipment areas and in mailboxes. Paper wasps build open combs under eaves and lanai frames. We treat spider hiding spots and remove wasp nests around the home.

Fleas and family pets

Dogs walking along lake edges and through the village pick up cat fleas from places where raccoons and other animals rest. Fleas lay eggs in pet beds, carpets and shaded spots outdoors. We treat the home and the outdoor resting areas, and each pet needs a vet-recommended flea product the same week.

Kitchens, pantries and small flies

Pantry pests such as the cigarette beetle arrive in packaged food and spread to spices, flour and pet food. Fruit flies breed in ripe produce and recycling, and drain flies in slow drains. Store dry goods in airtight containers, keep ripe fruit refrigerated and scrub slow drains with a brush and hot water.

Bed bugs and travel

Residents who travel and families who host visitors can bring home bed bugs in luggage. Look for small dark spots along mattress seams and bites in a line. Our bed bug treatment is a targeted inspection and treatment of beds, furniture and cracks, with follow-up visits.

A village inside a beach town

Sea Ranch Lakes is completely surrounded by Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, and the restaurants, shops, hotels and busy sidewalks of a beach town sit just beyond the gate. Commercial areas with dumpsters and food service support large populations of rats, palmetto bugs and flies, and those pests don't recognize the village boundary. Homes closest to A1A and the village edges tend to feel that outside pressure first, so we pay close attention to perimeter walls, hedges and garage doors on those properties.

Garages, storage and golf gear

Garages here often hold beach chairs, coolers, bikes, golf clubs, pool supplies and boxes. Clutter on the floor gives mice, palmetto bugs and brown widows places to hide, and a worn garage door seal is the easiest way in. Use lidded plastic bins, keep things up on shelves and replace bottom seals when they crack or flatten.

Moisture pests along the foundation

Sprinklers, lake humidity and shaded side yards keep the ground around many homes damp. That brings springtails, pillbugs and sowbugs and millipedes up to the walls, and after heavy rain they wander under doors onto tile floors. Point sprinkler heads away from the house, pull mulch back from the foundation and fix leaky hose bibs. We treat the perimeter where they gather.

Storms and rising lake levels

When heavy rain or a tropical storm raises the lakes and floods low spots, pests head for dry ground. Fire ants float in rafts and settle on the first high spot they reach, rats move into garages and attics, palmetto bugs come up through drains and mosquitoes hatch within days. See our guides to floating fire ants, post-flood pest control and rodents after a hurricane.

Neighbors and shared water

In a village this small, pests don't stop at property lines. A rat colony in one hedge, mosquitoes breeding in one forgotten container or a fire ant colony along a shared bank can affect several homes. When neighbors trim shared trees, clear standing water and seal rooflines around the same time, results last longer for everyone.

Before and after time away

Some residents spend part of the year elsewhere. A closed home lets roaches come up through dried-out drains and ants move into the kitchen undisturbed. Before you leave, clear open food, cover drains and schedule service if one is due. When you're back, call us if anything looks different.

A year of pests in Sea Ranch Lakes

Spring brings ant activity and the start of mosquito season. The rainy months from about May to October bring the heaviest mosquito, midge and palmetto bug pressure. Late summer brings orb weavers and storm season. In the cooler, drier months, roof rats push harder into attics. Quarterly service keeps protection steady all year.

The pests we see most in Sea Ranch Lakes

Mosquitoes and midges off the lakes, roof rats in palms and hedges, white-footed and ghost ants, fire ants along lake banks, palmetto bugs from drains, no-see-ums on calm coastal evenings, spiders and wasps around lanais, and fleas from wildlife.
