What makes mosquito control in Hollywood different

There's water on almost every side of town. The Intracoastal runs along the east, canals branch off near Johnson Street, North Lake and South Lake sit close to downtown, and mangroves line West Lake and the Anne Kolb Nature Center. Mosquitoes don't need any of that to breed, though. The ones biting you on the patio usually hatched in small water within a few steps of the house.

What you're dealing with depends a lot on where you live:

Where you liveWhat we usually findWhere we focus
Canal and lake homesBoat covers, kayak hulls, folded tarps and shady plantings on the land side of the seawallShade on the land side of the seawall and the shady side of the house, treated from land, never toward the water
Older tree-lined streets like Hollywood Lakes, Lawn Acres and Emerald HillsGutters clogged under big trees, bromeliads, thick hedges, yards backing onto the golf course and lakesThe shade inside hedges and under trees, decks and stairs. We also check gutters and downspouts for water that's sitting.
Beach-area condos and townhomesPlant saucers on balconies, pool decks, courtyardsThe patio, balcony and ground-floor areas you control. If your HOA wants help with common areas, we can talk with them.
West side, around TY ParkLakes, canals or swales out back, low spots that stay wet after rain, screened patiosLow spots after storms, the edges of pool cages and lanais, and entry doors

Rain is the other big factor. On Hollywood's east side, heavy rain and the highest tides of the year can leave water standing in swales and low yards, and more mosquitoes tend to show up about a week later. The yellow fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti), common across South Florida, can breed in water as small as a bottle cap, so even a tidy yard can have a problem.

What happens on each mosquito visit

Our mosquito service is a professional mosquito barrier spray treatment. Here's what happens, in order.

  1. FREE inspection walk (first visit). We walk the property with you and look for resting spots and breeding spots, including the easy misses: tarp folds, downspouts, boat covers, kayak hulls and bromeliads. We also ask where the kids play, where you grill, where the pets spend time and whether you use the dock, so we know where to focus.
  2. Backpack fogger on resting areas. Adult mosquitoes spend the day in still shade: inside hedges and under leaves, under trees, decks and stairs, behind A/C units, along fence lines and around the edges of pool cages and lanais. We treat those spots, starting where you spend the most time. The backpack fogger is for outdoor work only. We never use it indoors.
  3. Larvicide where water can't be emptied. Drains, containers that stay put, bromeliad cups and decorative fountains or water features without fish get larvicide so larvae can't develop. We don't treat ponds with fish, and we never treat into or toward canals, lakes or the Intracoastal.
  4. Larval traps on monthly plans. Monthly mosquito plans add larval traps, set in the shade near resting spots. They use a growth regulator, like birth control for insects, to help stop larvae from becoming biting adults. Larval traps come with monthly mosquito plans only.
  5. A quick wrap-up. Before we leave, we tell you what we treated, what to dump or cover, and when everyone can go back outside.

Also available: one-time event treatments for a birthday, backyard wedding or pool party, focused on where your guests will be (timing tips in spraying for mosquitoes before a party). If no-see-ums are the problem, know that they breed in marsh and mangrove mud, usually off your property. Treating resting spots helps around the home, but results are limited. Our guarantee covers no-see-ums for plan customers. More in no-see-ums on the lanai.

How often to treat for mosquitoes

Monthly. We recommend monthly treatments, especially in the rainy season, and we can adjust the schedule to your property.

Each heavy rain refills the containers around your yard, and each refill can start a new brood. Sun and rain also wear an outdoor treatment down, which is why the visits need to keep coming. A lot of homeowners start in spring, before the rains, so the yard is under control when the first big storms arrive, but you can start any time. Bites don't stop when summer does, either: see why you're still getting bitten in November. Our rainy season mosquito guide and the South Florida pest calendar show how the year plays out.

Getting ready, and after we leave

Before we arrive

  • Unlock gates or leave us the gate code.
  • Bring pets inside, and put pet bowls and toys away.
  • Close windows near the areas we'll treat.
  • Tell us about fish ponds, vegetable gardens, or anyone in the home who is sensitive to treatments.

After we leave

  • Keep kids and pets off treated areas until dry, and follow your technician's instructions.
  • Heavy rain soon after a visit can shorten how long the treatment lasts. How long a mosquito treatment lasts explains why.

Every product is applied according to its label, and we work around kids, pets and schedules. More in Mosquito Control for Pets and Families.

What you can do between visits

Treatment works best when there's less water for mosquitoes to use. A short walk around the yard once a week, and after every big storm, makes a real difference:

  • Low spots and swales. After heavy rain or a very high tide, look for puddles that are still there a few days later. If you see small wiggling larvae in any water, tell us.
  • Anything that holds rain. Tip out plant saucers, buckets, watering cans and kids' toys. Refill pet bowls with fresh water every day, and empty and scrub birdbaths at least once a week, every few days in summer heat. In hot weather, mosquitoes can go from egg to adult in about 7 to 10 days.
  • Boats and gear. Pull boat covers tight, drain any water pooled on them, and store kayaks hull-down.
  • Gutters and downspouts. Clear leaves, especially under big shade trees, so water doesn't sit in the gutter.
  • Bromeliads. Flush the cups with a hose, or ask us to treat them on the next visit (see bromeliads and mosquitoes).
  • Screens. Patch tears in the lanai or pool cage screen so mosquitoes from the yard don't follow you in.

Citronella candles, bug zappers and patio fans get asked about a lot. Citronella, zappers or fans? explains what each one does and doesn't do. If bites pick up between visits, call or text and let us know. Our full checklist is in the mosquito breeding sites guide, and if you live on the water, pests in canal homes covers what else comes with it.

Mosquito control FAQs

I live right on a canal. Will mosquito treatment hurt the water or the fish?
We treat the shady resting areas on your property from land and never spray into the canal. We never apply anything over or toward the water. Your technician will show you exactly what was treated.
How often should mosquito treatments be done?
Monthly. We recommend monthly treatments, especially during the rainy season, with the schedule customized to your property.
Can you treat just my balcony or patio at a beach condo?
Yes, as long as your building allows it. We can treat your patio, the shade around your balcony plants and the areas you're responsible for, and help you get rid of the small water sources that keep mosquitoes coming back. We also handle building-wide service for condo associations, with a written service report after each visit. See HOA and community mosquito control.
Why do I get bitten during the day, not just at dusk?
The container-breeding mosquitoes common around South Florida homes, like the Asian tiger mosquito and the yellow fever mosquito, often bite during the day. That's why we look for small water close to the house and treat the shade where they rest. More in mosquitoes biting during the day.
Doesn't Broward County already spray for mosquitoes?
Broward County runs its own mosquito control program. You can request service online or by calling 311, and the county says truck spraying is done only where its surveillance criteria are met. County programs work across whole neighborhoods, while a private service like ours treats the resting and breeding spots in your own yard on a regular schedule. The two work together. See what county mosquito control does.
When can my kids and pets go back outside after a treatment?
Once the treated areas are dry. Your technician will tell you before leaving, and every product is applied according to its label. We also work around kids, pets and schedules when we plan the visit.
