County mosquito control is one of those services most people only think about when the mosquitoes get bad. Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties all run mosquito programs, and you can ask them for help. They look at mosquitoes across whole neighborhoods. The flowerpot saucer behind your AC unit, though, is still yours. Here's what each county says its program does, how to request service, and how a backyard service fits alongside it. The two work together.

What a county mosquito control program does

Each county describes its own program on its website, and the details differ. In general, county programs watch mosquito activity across the county, respond to resident requests, and treat when their own criteria are met. They also ask residents to get rid of standing water around their homes. Check your county's page for exactly what it offers.

Broward County mosquito control

According to Broward County's mosquito control page, you can request service for free through an online form or by calling 311. An inspector may contact you about inspecting your property, finding breeding areas and giving tips, and standing water may be tipped, tossed or treated. The county says truck spraying is done only where its surveillance criteria are met. You can only request service for your own property, and the county doesn't provide service for sand flies, drain flies or no-see-ums.

Miami-Dade County mosquito control

Miami-Dade County's mosquito control page says you can submit a service request for an inspection online, by calling 311 or through the 311 Direct app. The county lists site inspections and surveillance, truck spraying and aerial spraying as part of its program, and asks residents to "Drain and Cover" standing water.

Palm Beach County mosquito control

On Palm Beach County's mosquito control page, you can report mosquito activity at a home, business or neighborhood, check the status of a request, and sign up for aerial spray notifications.

The breeding spots in your own yard

County programs work across whole neighborhoods. Your yard is where your own breeding spots are, and many of them hold just a cap of water. Look for:

  • Plant saucers, buckets, watering cans and kids' toys
  • Clogged gutters and low spots in the yard that stay wet
  • Tarps, grill covers and pool covers that hold water
  • Bromeliads and other plants that hold water in their leaves
  • Wet spots under AC units and around downspouts
  • Birdbaths and pet bowls that sit for days

Tip and toss standing water at least once a week, especially in the rainy season. Our guide to mosquito breeding sites has more, and our rainy season mosquito guide explains why it gets worse from May to October.

Where a backyard mosquito service fits

Our mosquito control is a professional mosquito barrier spray treatment with a backpack fogger, focused on the shady spots in your yard where mosquitoes rest. It's recommended monthly, especially in the rainy season. We use larvicide on breeding spots around the home, and monthly mosquito plans can include larval traps. For communities, see HOA mosquito control, and our mosquito FAQ answers common questions. Mosquito service is quoted after the FREE inspection.

Our general pest plan is $125 per quarter, about $42 a month, and monthly or custom schedules are quoted after the inspection. For plan customers: "If pests come back between visits, so do we, at no extra cost." There are no long-term contracts and no cancellation fees, just a simple service agreement. We're family-run and licensed, with 30+ years in the business, and hablamos español. Browse more guides.

County mosquito control questions

Does the county spray for mosquitoes?
All three counties list spraying as part of their programs, based on their own criteria. Check your county's page for how it works where you live.
How do I request county mosquito service?
Broward and Miami-Dade take requests online or through 311. Palm Beach County takes reports online or by phone. See the links above.
Will the county treat my backyard?
Broward says an inspector may contact you to inspect your property. Even so, the weekly tip-and-toss in your yard is up to you.
Do I need a mosquito service if the county sprays?
They do different jobs. The county looks at the whole area; a backyard service focuses on the spots around your home where mosquitoes rest and breed.
