How pests change from the coast to the Everglades edge

A condo on the Hillsboro Mile and a barn in Southwest Ranches are both in Broward, but they don't have the same pest problems. Here is how we look at the county, area by area.

The coast and the Intracoastal

On the Broward coast, from the Hallandale towers up to the Hillsboro Mile, salt air wears out door sweeps and seals. Roof rats live in coconut palms and sea grape, and palmetto bugs come up through the drains. No-see-ums and mosquitoes are worst near the inlets and mangroves, and pests move indoors after storms. In condo towers, roaches travel between units through shared walls.

Older neighborhoods along the canals and the river

Mid-century block homes, bungalows, duplexes and small condo buildings fill central Broward along the river and the old canals. Big shade trees give roof rats a road to the roof, older plumbing lets palmetto bugs in, and busy kitchens in shared-wall buildings get German roaches.

Lakes, HOAs and family suburbs in the west

In west Broward, lakefront lots and HOA common areas breed mosquitoes. Fire ants build mounds in pavers and on sports fields, and white-footed ants trail up the stucco. Homes that back onto preserves and canal banks see more fleas and ticks.

Out west we serve Weston (the Everglades edge and HOA mosquito control), Pembroke Pines, Miramar (from historic east Miramar to the western lakes), Cooper City, Coral Springs, Parkland (preserves and gated communities) and Coconut Creek.

Acreage, barns and horse country

Broward still has horse country, and its barns, feed rooms and pastures draw rats and barn flies. We work around the animals: we never spray animals, we avoid the feed rooms, and we keep treatments away from water troughs and plants in bloom. Barn fly service runs on a flexible recurring schedule.

Broward County mosquito control and the spots around your home

Broward County runs its own mosquito program. According to the county's mosquito control page, residents can request free service online or by calling 311. The county says truck spraying is done only where its surveillance criteria are met, and it doesn't provide service for sand flies, drain flies or no-see-ums. The county works neighborhood by neighborhood, but the breeding and resting spots on your own Broward property are still yours. Our mosquito service is a professional mosquito barrier spray treatment with a backpack fogger, aimed at the shrubs, hedges and shady resting spots around your home, plus larvicide on breeding spots such as bromeliad cups. The fogger is used outdoors only, never indoors, including condo hallways and trash rooms. We recommend monthly service, especially in the rainy season, and we can adjust the schedule.
