How long does a mosquito treatment last? Here's the honest version: there's no fixed number of days anyone can promise you in South Florida. How long a yard mosquito treatment keeps working depends on how hard it rains, how often the sprinklers run, how much shade your yard has, and how many new mosquitoes hatch nearby. That's exactly why we recommend monthly service, especially in the rainy season, and why we'd rather tell you what changes the answer than quote you a number.

Quick note before we go further: this is about treating the yard, not the repellent you put on your skin. Those are different products with different labels. For repellent, follow the directions on the can.

Why "how long does mosquito treatment last" has no single answer

Think of a barrier treatment as a layer on the shady spots where adult mosquitoes rest during the day: under the deck, along shaded walls, under the eaves, in the thick cover at the edge of the yard. Mosquitoes land there, contact the treatment, and you get fewer of them. Anything that wears down that layer, or brings in a fresh wave of mosquitoes faster than the layer can handle, shortens the time you notice a difference.

Here's what does that in a South Florida yard:

What happensWhy it matters
Heavy afternoon stormsA downpour right after a visit can wash some of the treatment off the resting spots.
SprinklersIrrigation that soaks the same spots every morning wears it down, too.
Sun and heatTreated surfaces that sit in full sun break down faster than shaded ones.
New hatchesEvery bucket, saucer and clogged gutter that holds water for a week is a new batch of mosquitoes.
Water you don't controlA neighbor's yard, a retention pond, a canal. Mosquitoes don't respect property lines.

Our mosquito treatment process page has a "What Affects Results" section that goes over the same list from the visit side.

Does rain wash away mosquito spray?

Some of it, sometimes. A quick shower usually isn't the end of it. A heavy downpour soon after a visit can cut it short, and in July and August that's not unusual. Two things to do about it:

  1. Tell us. If a storm hits right after a visit and the mosquitoes come right back, let us know. Our mosquito FAQ covers this one too.
  2. Dump the water that storm left behind. Rain is also what fills every container in your yard, and those containers matter more than the rain does. Our rainy season guide explains why the wet months are the worst.

What keeps a treatment working longer

You can't control the weather. You can control a lot of what's breeding in your own yard.

  • Tip and toss after every rain. Plant saucers, kids' toys, tarps, the wheelbarrow, the boat cover, the bucket by the hose. Our breeding sites checklist has the full list.
  • Clean the gutters. A clogged gutter can hold water for days.
  • Larvicide on breeding spots. On each visit, we apply larvicide to breeding spots around the home that can't simply be emptied, like drains and containers. We never treat ponds, lakes, canals or the Intracoastal.
  • Larval traps on monthly plans. Customers on monthly mosquito plans also get larval traps. They use a growth regulator, like birth control for insects, so fewer larvae make it to adulthood.
  • Less dense cover by the patio. Trimming isn't our job, but fewer dense, shady pockets near where you sit means fewer places for adults to wait out the day.

How often should you spray for mosquitoes in Florida?

For most South Florida yards, monthly. That's what we recommend, especially from the start of the rainy season through the fall, and the schedule can be adjusted around your yard and the time of year. Our post on mosquitoes in November explains why the season runs longer here than people expect.

If you want fewer mosquitoes for a birthday party or a backyard wedding, we also do one-time event sprays. Ask for it a few days ahead so it can be on the schedule.

Can you go outside right after a mosquito treatment?

Keep kids and pets off treated areas until dry, and follow your technician's instructions. Your technician will tell you what that means for your yard on the day.

What it costs and what's covered

Mosquito service is quoted after the FREE inspection, because yards are very different from one another. For plan customers: "If pests come back between visits, so do we, at no extra cost." That covers mosquito plans too, so if they bounce back between visits, call us. There are no long-term contracts and no cancellation fees, just a simple service agreement. We're family-run and licensed, with 30+ years in the business, and hablamos español. See our mosquito control service or browse more guides.

Mosquito treatment FAQs

Do yard mosquito treatments really work?
They reduce the number of mosquitoes around your home, and they work best on a regular schedule together with getting rid of standing water. They don't make a yard mosquito-free, and anyone who promises that is overselling.
Is it worth spraying your yard for mosquitoes?
If you use your yard, have kids or pets who play outside, or live near water, most people find it is. A FREE inspection will tell you what your yard needs.
When should you stop spraying for mosquitoes in South Florida?
Many yards here need service most of the year. Some may need less in the driest months. We'll adjust the schedule with you.
Can you treat for mosquitoes in the rain?
We don't treat while it's raining, because the treatment needs time to dry on the resting spots. If a storm is coming in, we may move the visit.
