What's in a Mosquito Treatment, and When Can Kids and Pets Go Back Outside?
Family-run, licensed and insured pest control in South Florida.
$50 OFF your first service + FREE inspectionNew customers · No code needed · No expirationHow long after mosquito spray can you go outside? Once the treated areas are dry. Keep kids and pets off treated areas until dry, and follow your technician's instructions. The product label sets the wait, not us and not a rule of thumb from the internet. Labels for these products don't give a set number of minutes. They say to keep people and pets off treated surfaces until the spray has dried. If you're home, your technician tells you what that means for your yard before leaving. As for what's in a Pro-Spray mosquito treatment: EPA-registered products applied by licensed technicians, with a backpack fogger on the shady spots where adult mosquitoes rest, plus larvicide on breeding spots around the home. Here's what goes on the yard, where it goes, and the treatment-day timeline for kids, dogs, cats, toys and the pool.
What's in a Pro-Spray mosquito treatment?
Every product is applied according to its label. The label is the legal instruction sheet for that product. It says where it can go, how much, and when people and pets can go back into the area. We follow it on every visit. A mosquito control visit has up to three parts:
- A treatment for adult mosquitoes. Your technician uses a backpack fogger to apply an EPA-registered mix to the places they hide during the day. The mix has two parts: an insecticide for adult mosquitoes, plus a growth regulator, like birth control for insects, that helps keep the next generation from growing into biting adults. It's a targeted treatment, not a blanket spray over the whole yard. If you want to know exactly which product was used on your yard, ask your technician.
- Larvicide on breeding spots. Some water can't be dumped, like the cups of a bromeliad. On those breeding spots around the home, we use a larvicide made for standing water, wherever the label allows: small granules for spots like bromeliad cups, or a slow-release tablet or briquet for bigger spots that hold water. That way fewer larvae grow into biting mosquitoes. We never put larvicide in ponds or fountains with fish.
- Larval traps, on monthly plans only. On monthly mosquito plans, we also set larval traps that use "a growth regulator, like birth control for insects." Mosquitoes that visit a trap can carry it to other small pockets of water nearby.

Where the treatment goes, and where it doesn't
Adult mosquitoes spend the hot part of the day in shade and humidity. That's where we treat:
- Shrubs, hedges and other shady resting spots
- Under decks and stairs, behind A/C units and along fence lines
- The shady side of the house
We treat shrubs and hedges because mosquitoes rest there. We don't treat plants for plant pests or plant health.
Where it doesn't go:
- Never indoors. The backpack fogger is for outdoor use only. We never use it indoors. That includes living spaces, garages, condo hallways and trash rooms.
- Never over or toward water. We never spray over or toward ponds, canals, lakes, pools or the Intracoastal. A backyard fountain gets larvicide only if it has no fish and the product label allows it.
- Never on animals. We never spray animals.
Our standing-water checklist covers the breeding spots you can dump or cover between visits.
County trucks vs a yard treatment
County mosquito control programs treat whole neighborhoods, mostly from trucks, and Miami-Dade also lists aerial spraying. They decide when and where based on their own surveillance. A yard treatment is different. A technician on foot treats the resting and breeding spots on your property and can see exactly what they're treating. For more on the county side, see what the county trucks spray.
How long after mosquito spray can you go outside?
The short answer is the approved one: keep kids and pets off treated areas until dry, and follow your technician's instructions. The product label sets the wait, and if you're home, your technician will tell you before leaving when everyone can go back out.
What "dry" looks like:
- Leaves and hedges: no wet shine on the leaves and no drips.
- Decks, stairs and the edges of the patio or pool cage: no damp patches or darker wet spots.
- The lawn edge along a treated hedge or fence: the grass blades look dry, not beaded.
Shade, humidity and a still afternoon can slow drying. If you aren't sure, give it more time or call us and ask.
Do you need to be home? No. The treatment is all outdoors, so we can do it while you're out, as long as we can get through the gate and the pets are inside. When you book, tell us if the gate is locked or has a code, and where the pets will be. If you are home, stay inside with the kids and pets while we treat and until the treated areas are dry, and close windows near the areas we're treating.
Dogs and cats
Keep dogs and cats inside, or in an area we aren't treating, during the visit and until the treated areas are dry. Hold off on letting the dog out the back door until then.
If a dog or cat gets onto a treated area before it's dry, bring them inside. If their fur or paws got wet with the treatment, rinse them with plenty of water, the first step product labels give for skin contact. Then call your veterinarian, or the poison control number on the product label, for advice, and have the product name handy. Call or text us and we'll give you the exact product name and its label. With a cat, call the vet sooner rather than later: cats groom their fur, and they're more sensitive than dogs to some mosquito insecticides.

Kids, toys, bowls and the pool
Before the visit, bring in toys, pet bowls, pool floats and outdoor cushions. If anything was left out near a treated area, wash it with soap and water before the kids or pets use it again, and empty, wash and refill outdoor water bowls. Let us know where the kids play and whether you have a vegetable garden or fruit trees, and we'll plan around them. Your technician doesn't treat play surfaces, toys or pet bowls, never sprays over or toward the pool, and keeps the treatment off fruits, vegetables and other food plants. We also stay off flowers in bloom, where bees feed.
After the visit, the same rule applies: kids go back to the yard, the swing set and the pool deck once the treated areas are dry and your technician has said it's fine.
Horses and barns
We treat barn and livestock properties too, keep treatment out of feed rooms and never spray animals. See planning a treatment around kids, pets and animals for barns, and our post on barn fly control for small barns.
What time of day do we treat?
We set the visit time with you when we book. If there's a time the kids are usually out back or the dog has the run of the yard, tell us and we'll work around it. Adult mosquitoes rest in the same shady spots all day, so the treatment doesn't depend on a special hour. The weather matters more. We don't treat in the rain or in strong wind, and if heavy rain is on the way, we may move the visit so the treatment has time to dry.
If it rains, or mosquitoes come back
A heavy downpour soon after a visit can cut a treatment short. Our post on how long a treatment keeps working covers rain, sprinklers and new hatches. If you're on a mosquito plan: "If pests come back between visits, so do we, at no extra cost."
