The Florida carpenter ant, often called a "bull ant" or "sugar ant," is a large native ant common across the state. Its two-tone coloring and size make it easy to notice when it walks across a kitchen counter at night.
Unlike some carpenter ants in northern states, Florida carpenter ants usually don't do major damage. They don't eat wood. They prefer existing hollow spaces and soft, moisture-damaged wood, but finding them indoors can be a sign of a moisture problem.
How to Identify Them
Look for a big ant with an orange-red front half and a black rear. Workers vary in size, with larger "majors" having bigger heads. Seen from the side, the thorax has a smooth, evenly curved top. They have a single node between thorax and abdomen.
Common look-alikes:
- Fire ant: much smaller, all reddish, and nests in lawn mounds.
- Other carpenter ant species: several occur in Florida; treatment is similar.
Life Cycle and Habits
Colonies start with a single queen and grow over several years, often sending out "satellite" nests into nearby trees, attics or walls. Winged reproductives swarm to start new colonies. Workers forage at night, following trails along branches, fences, wires and pipes. They eat honeydew, sweets, dead insects and other proteins.
Signs of an Infestation
- Large ants walking indoors at night, especially in kitchens and bathrooms
- Trails along tree limbs, fences, cables and the roofline at dusk
- Winged ants inside, especially near windows
- Coarse sawdust-like debris (called frass) near baseboards or window frames
- Faint rustling inside walls in heavy infestations
Is it dangerous?
- Bites
Can bite and spray formic acid; nest in voids and moist, damaged wood.
Why They Show Up in South Florida Homes
Trees, palms and shrubs touching the house give them direct routes inside. Leaky roofs, A/C condensation and wet window frames soften wood and create ideal nesting spots. Mulch, firewood and stumps near the home host outdoor colonies.
Prevention Tips
- Trim branches, palms and vines away from the house.
- Repair roof and plumbing leaks and replace water-damaged wood.
- Keep firewood and lumber off the ground and away from walls.
- Seal gaps around utility lines and windows.
- Remove old stumps near the home.
How Pro-Spray Treats Florida Carpenter Ants
We inspect at the right time of day to follow trails to nests, then use baits and non-repellent treatments around trees, the perimeter, entry points and voids where they're traveling. If we find moisture-damaged wood or conditions that encourage nesting, we'll tell you so you can make repairs.
Satellite Nests and Moisture Problems
A carpenter ant trail in your kitchen at night often leads back to a "satellite" nest rather than the main colony. The parent nest may be in a tree, an old stump or a palm boot outside, while workers and brood are kept in a hollow door frame, a wall void behind a leaky window, or the space under a bathtub. Finding these satellite nests matters because baits and treatments need to reach both. Areas worth checking include window frames with water stains, wood around A/C closets, roof edges with past leaks and fascia boards that feel soft. Fixing the moisture source makes those spots far less attractive.
