Most spiders around South Florida homes eat other bugs and never bother anyone. Two deserve a closer look: the brown widow, which hides under patio furniture and mailbox lids, and the southern black widow, which prefers sheds, woodpiles and utility boxes. People also ask about the brown recluse, which isn't established in South Florida and is often confused with look-alikes. If you're finding widows near doors or webs keep coming back, it's time for an inspection. Call or text anytime: 833-845-9284.

Where spiders set up around South Florida homes

Spiders follow food, and here the food is the steady supply of insects drawn to lights, screens and damp landscaping. That's why the same corners fill up again a few days after you sweep them. Pool cages are a favorite: webs across the top rail, spiny orb-weavers in the corners and, now and then, a brown widow under the patio furniture. Our post on spiders in the pool cage walks through what lives where. Docks and boat lifts are another hot spot, with webs strung between the pilings and around the lights; see wasps and spiders around the dock. Brown widows like the underside of things: patio furniture, mailboxes, pool fences, railings, eaves and kids' play sets. Southern black widows want quieter cover low to the ground, like woodpiles, meter boxes, debris, sheds and garages. Wolf spiders don't build webs at all. They hunt in lawns, mulch and pavers and sometimes wander inside. Clutter in a garage gives all of them somewhere to hide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we have brown recluse spiders in South Florida?
The brown recluse isn't established in South Florida, and most spiders reported as one turn out to be look-alikes. Our brown recluse page shows how to rule them out.
What should I do if I find a widow spider?
Don't handle it. Both widows are venomous. Brown widows rarely bite, and their bites are generally less serious than a black widow's. A southern black widow bite should be checked by a doctor. Wear gloves when you move outdoor furniture, stored items or firewood.
Why do the webs keep coming back after I sweep?
Because the insects that spiders eat keep coming. Outdoor lights, screens and damp landscaping draw them in. Cutting down the bugs around the house cuts down the spiders.
