Bed Bugs in South Florida
What bed bugs look like, the signs they leave on a mattress, and what happens after an inspection.
$50 OFF your first service + FREE inspectionNew customers · No code needed · No expirationWith cruise ports, airports, vacation rentals and multi-unit buildings, bed bugs can turn up in any South Florida home. They're hitchhikers, not a sign of a dirty house. They travel in luggage, boxes, clothing and used furniture, then hide in mattress seams, bed frames and couches and come out at night to feed. The key is catching them early and treating thoroughly, with follow-up. Call or text anytime: 833-845-9284.
How bed bugs get into South Florida homes
Bed bugs can show up anywhere a lot of people sleep or sit in a short time: hotels, dorms, buses, planes, cruise cabins, movie theaters and gyms. They're a particular concern in multi-unit buildings, where they can move between units. Coming home from a trip, open the suitcase in the garage or on a tile floor instead of on the bed, put clothes straight into the dryer on high heat and check the seams and zippers with a flashlight; our post on bed bugs after a cruise has the full routine. Used furniture is the other common way in. Check a couch or headboard in the seller's driveway, before it goes in the car, by running a light along every seam and under the cushions; see how to check used furniture for bed bugs. Landlords and vacation rental hosts should look between guests, because a quick check at turnover catches a problem before the next booking does. The signs to look for are small dark spots like marker dots on sheets and mattress seams, rusty stains, shed skins and tiny white eggs in cracks.
Early signs are easy to miss. Strip the bed and use a flashlight on the mattress seams, tags and piping, the corners of the box spring, the bed frame joints and the back of the headboard. Small dark spots like marker dots are droppings. Rusty stains on sheets, shed skins and tiny white eggs in seams are other clues, and not everyone reacts to bites.
Which one is it?

| Bat bug | About 1/4 inch | Reddish-brown, flat and oval | Attics, wall voids, chimneys, barrel tile roofs | Bites in rooms under the attic or near a chimney |
