What Is a Bat Bug?

Bat bugs are close relatives of bed bugs that feed mainly on bats. They live in bat roosts and generally stay there. Problems start when bats leave or are removed: the hungry bugs move into living spaces and may bite people, though they can't establish long term on people alone.

Bat Bug vs Bed Bug

The two look almost identical. Under magnification, bat bugs have longer hairs on the shield behind the head, longer than the width of the eye. A pest pro or lab can confirm. The key clue is location: bugs coming from ceilings, attic hatches or near a known roost point to bat bugs.

Life Cycle

Bat bugs lay eggs in cracks around bat roosts. Nymphs hatch and molt several times, taking a blood meal from bats before each molt. They stay in or near the roost as long as bats are present, which is why trouble usually starts after bats leave.

Look-alikes and How to Tell Them Apart

  • Bed bugs: nearly identical, with shorter hairs on the shield behind the head.
  • Swallow bugs: related bugs tied to bird nests, especially swallows.
  • Carpet beetles: round and patterned, not flat.
  • Cockroach nymphs: long antennae and fast-running.

Where They Hide in South Florida Homes

Attics, wall voids and soffits, chimneys, barrel tile roofs, and gaps around ceiling fixtures and attic hatches. In rooms below roosts, they hide in ceiling cracks, molding and light fixtures.

When to Call a Pro

Call if you see bed bug-like insects near ceilings, attic hatches or a chimney, or if you've had bats removed and now see bites. We coordinate timing with the wildlife exclusion.

Signs of Bat Bugs

  • Bed bug-like insects on ceilings, walls or near attic access
  • Bites in rooms under the attic or near a chimney
  • Bats seen flying from the roofline at dusk, guano staining or droppings

Is it dangerous?

  • Bites

Bites people when their normal bat hosts are gone.

Prevention Tips

  • Don't try to remove bats yourself or seal them in.
  • Have an experienced wildlife or bat exclusion professional handle bat exclusion.
  • Seal ceiling gaps, light fixtures and attic access to keep bugs out of rooms.

Bats Need a Wildlife Pro

Bats are protected in Florida. They can't be killed or harmed, and exclusion has to follow state rules, including a maternity season (April 15 through August 14) when exclusion isn't allowed because young bats can't fly yet. Bat removal must be handled by an experienced wildlife or bat exclusion professional. We don't remove bats.

How Pro-Spray Treats Bat Bugs

We treat the bugs. Once the bats have been excluded by a wildlife pro, we inspect the affected rooms, attic access points and voids and treat the cracks, crevices and harborage where bat bugs are hiding, using methods similar to our bed bug treatment. Treating without solving the bat roost only brings the bugs back, so timing with the exclusion matters. Our Bug Free Guarantee: If pests come back between visits, so do we, at no extra cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can bat bugs live on people?
They may bite people, but they need bats to keep a population going.
Should I get rid of the bats first?
Yes, through an experienced wildlife or bat exclusion professional, and not during maternity season (April 15 through August 14). Then we treat the bugs.
How do I know if it's a bat bug or bed bug?
A close look at the hairs on the shield, plus where they're found, usually tells. We can confirm on inspection.
