Rain, humidity and closed-up houses

Weather drives most of these calls. After a downpour, millipedes and pillbugs crawl out of flooded mulch beds and collect along door thresholds and in garages, and springtails jump in numbers during the rainy season. In a dry spell the pillbugs come in looking for moisture instead. Inside, these pests are a moisture gauge. Silverfish, springtails and drain flies are the usual tiny bugs in a bathroom, and all three point to damp grout, a slow leak or a drain that rarely gets used; our guide to tiny bugs in the bathroom helps you sort them out. Cool, breezy nights after a cold front can push a few more pests toward the house for a night or two; see cold front pests. Homes that sit closed up for the summer are where booklice do best, on damp books, boxes and window sills, and where silverfish settle into closets and storage. Our closing up for summer checklist covers what to do before you leave.

What we do and when to call

Silverfish and the other common household pests are covered by our $125 quarterly pest plan (about $42/month). Each visit treats the lower foundation wall and spot-treats door gaps, weep holes, window frames, pipe openings and eaves, where these pests get in. Many of them start outdoors and move in after heavy rain, so that perimeter is where we stop them. See our pest control services.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do millipedes pile up at my door after it rains?
Rain floods the mulch and leaf litter they live in, so they move to higher, drier ground, and your threshold is in the way. Pulling mulch back from the foundation helps, along with a perimeter treatment.
Do silverfish bite?
No. Silverfish don't bite, but they damage paper, books, wallpaper, photos, cardboard and some fabrics. Finding them usually means a damp bathroom, closet or storage area.
Are springtails a sign of a bigger problem?
Springtails signal excess moisture. Look for leaks under sinks, overwatered planters and damp window sills, and dry those spots out.
