South Florida has two kinds of roach problems. Indoor breeders like the German and brown-banded cockroach live and multiply inside homes. Outdoor roaches like palmetto bugs live in drains, trees and landscaping and wander inside. Figuring out which you have makes all the difference in how they're treated.

Indoor Roaches

Look-alike warning: the Asian cockroach looks almost identical to the German cockroach but lives outdoors and flies to lights at dusk.

Outdoor Roaches That Come Inside

What Is a Palmetto Bug?

"Palmetto bug" is a South Florida nickname, not a single species. Most of the time it means the American cockroach. People also use it for the smokybrown cockroach and the Florida woods roach, the native roach that first had the name. All three live mostly outdoors and come in through drains, doors and rooflines.
