Flies in South Florida Homes
House flies, fruit flies, drain flies and lovebugs: name the fly, find what it's breeding in, and stop it.
$50 OFF your first service + FREE inspectionNew customers · No code needed · No expirationMost fly problems start with something they're breeding in: a trash can, a drain, ripe fruit or pet waste. Name the fly and you're halfway to finding the source. In South Florida's heat a house fly can go from egg to adult in as little as 7 to 10 days, so sprays and traps that only hit the adults never catch up. Find the source first, then treat. Finding the source
Each fly points to a different source. House flies lay eggs on moist, rotting material: garbage, pet waste, grass clippings, compost and spilled pet food, or something that died under the deck. The back door is usually where it all comes together, with the bins, the grill and the pet bowls. Tight lids, a bin rinse every week or two and dog waste picked up daily break the cycle; see flies around the trash and back door. In the kitchen, try the tape test: before bed, put clear tape over the sink drain, sticky side down, leaving a small gap. Flies stuck to it in the morning mean something is breeding in that drain, most often drain flies. A clean tape points to the fruit bowl, the bottom of the trash can or the recycling, where fruit flies breed. Our guide to fruit flies vs. drain flies walks through it. Horse owners have their own version of the problem in stalls and manure piles; see barn fly control for small barns.
