Before you hire anyone, a handful of questions to ask a pest control company will tell you most of what you need to know. They work the same if you're calling us or someone else, and for a house, a condo or an HOA board. Good answers are specific and easy to check. Vague answers usually mean you should keep asking. Here's the checklist, grouped by topic, with our own answers in a short box at the end.

How to check a pest control license in Florida

In Florida, pest control companies are licensed by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS). Business license numbers start with JB. Ask for the number, then look it up yourself on the FDACS license search.

  • What's your license number? Any licensed company should give it to you without hesitating.
  • Is the company licensed for the work I need? Florida licenses cover specific categories, and each company must have a state-certified operator in charge for those categories. Ask whether the company is licensed for what you need, like general household pest and rodent control.
  • Will the technician have ID? Technicians carry a pest control ID card. It's fine to ask to see it.
  • Is the truck marked? Service vehicles are marked with the company name on both sides.

Insurance questions

  • Are you insured? Then ask for a certificate of insurance. HOAs and building managers often need one on file before anyone works on the property.
  • Do you treat common areas? For condos and communities, ask who handles the hallways, trash rooms and grounds, and how that's scheduled.

Questions to ask a pest control company about treatment

  • Do you inspect first? A company that quotes and treats without looking is guessing.
  • What do you think the pest is, and how will you treat it? The answer should change depending on the pest. Roaches, ants, rodents and bed bugs are handled very differently.
  • What will you use, and where? Ask what they'll use and where it goes, inside and outside. A good company will tell you how to prep and when treated areas are ready to use.
  • Do you treat inside, outside or both? Some problems start outside and come in. Others live inside.
  • How many visits will this take? For problems that need follow-ups, ask how many and when, before work starts.
  • Is there anything you don't do? Every company has limits. It's better to hear them up front.

Questions about the agreement and price

  • Is there a long-term contract? Ask how long you're committed for, in writing.
  • What does it cost to cancel? Cancellation fees are worth knowing about on day one.
  • What's included in the plan price? Ask which pests and which visits are covered, and what costs extra.
  • How often will you come? Our post on how often you need pest control in South Florida can help you judge the answer.

Questions about the guarantee

  • If pests come back between visits, what happens? Ask whether there's a guarantee, who it covers and whether a return visit costs anything.
  • Is it in writing? A guarantee you can't point to isn't much of one.

How to choose a pest control company

After the calls, the choice usually comes down to a few things: a license you were able to check, clear answers about treatment, terms you understand, and someone who explained instead of rushing you.
