If this is your first pest control visit, it helps to know the order things happen in, so nothing feels like a surprise. The short version: the technician looks before treating, asks you questions, treats inside and out based on what turns up, and explains what comes next. You don't need to empty your kitchen or leave the house for a general pest service. Here's how a first visit with us usually goes, and what's useful to tell us.

Before we arrive

You'll get a time window when you book. A few small things make the visit go better:

  • Keep pets in one room or the yard while we work, and let us know if a dog will be in the backyard.
  • Clear the area under the kitchen and bathroom sinks if it's packed, so we can see the pipes.
  • Unlock side gates so we can get around the whole house.
  • Jot down what you've seen, where and when. A photo on your phone helps more than you'd think.

For bed bugs, prep is different and more involved. Use our bed bug prep guide instead.

What happens at your first pest control visit

It starts with an inspection, inside and out. We look before we treat. Inside, that means the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry, garage, and anywhere you've seen activity. Outside, we walk the foundation and look at doors, windows, weep holes, plumbing and AC line entry points, and plants touching the house. We'll tell you what we find, and what we don't.

Then we treat based on what we found. Inside, that usually means gel bait placed in cracks and crevices, plus crack-and-crevice or spot treatment along baseboards, under sinks and around plumbing where we found activity. Outside, it's a treatment around the foundation and the perimeter of the home, and we knock down webs along the eaves.

Keep kids and pets off treated areas until dry, and follow your technician's instructions.

What to tell the technician

You know your home better than we do. These details change what we do:

  • What you saw, and when. Roaches at night in the kitchen point to a different problem than ants on the counter in the afternoon.
  • What you've already tried. Store sprays, foggers, baits. Some of them affect what we use. (If it was a bug bomb, our post on whether bug bombs work on roaches explains why that matters.)
  • Kids, pets and anyone sensitive in the home, so we can plan around them.
  • Fish tanks and birds, so we know which rooms to be extra careful in.
  • Noises in the attic or droppings anywhere. That's a rodent question and gets its own plan.
  • Tiny flies in a bathroom or by the kitchen sink. Those are often drain flies.

What happens after the visit

It's common to see some pests for a few days after a treatment while it works. That doesn't mean it failed. If you're seeing more instead of fewer after a couple of weeks, call us. Some problems also need more than one visit, and the technician will tell you which:

  • German roaches usually take more than one visit. We come back and check activity.
  • Bed bugs usually need at least one follow-up visit.
  • Rodents get a set number of follow-up visits. We inspect for entry points, set traps and tamper-resistant bait stations, and seal the gaps rodents are using with exclusion work, to help keep them from getting back in. We'll tell you how many visits your home is likely to need. We seal gaps, but we don't repair damage.

If you stay on a plan

Our general pest plan is $125 per quarter, about $42 a month, and monthly or custom schedules are quoted after the inspection. If you're on that quarterly plan, drain treatments for drain flies are included as needed, at no extra cost. For plan customers: "If pests come back between visits, so do we, at no extra cost." There are no long-term contracts and no cancellation fees, just a simple service agreement. We're family-run and licensed, with 30+ years in the business, and hablamos español.

First visit questions

How long does the first pest control visit take?
It depends on the size of the home and what we find. The inspection is part of it, so the first visit is usually longer than the ones after.
Do I need to be home?
For the first visit, it helps a lot, so you can show us where you've seen activity and we can treat inside. Exterior-only visits later on may not need you there.
Do I need to leave the house during treatment?
For a general pest service, usually not. Follow your technician's instructions about treated areas.
What does an exterminator do on the first visit?
Inspects inside and out, asks what you've seen, treats based on what turns up, and explains the next steps and any follow-ups.
