Fort Lauderdale's tropical landscaping is beautiful, and ants love it. Dense hedges, palms, bromeliads and vines planted tight against the house give white-footed ants and ghost ants a direct route inside. In older bungalow neighborhoods, ants trail in through gaps in old windows, around plumbing and along wood trim. Florida carpenter ants nest in palms, old trees and damp wood around porches and come in at night.
Waterfront and newer homes have their own ant hot spots: pavers, pool decks, coral stone patios and courtyards. Big-headed ants and fire ants nest underneath and push sand up between the joints. During the rainy season, flooded nests send colonies indoors quickly.
What We Treat for Ant in Fort Lauderdale
- White-footed ants and ghost ants in kitchens and bathrooms
- Big-headed ants under pavers and pool decks
- Fire ant mounds near the home and in swales
- Florida carpenter ants in palms and damp wood
- Ant trails along old windows and trim
How We Treat It
Courtyards, coral stone patios and pool decks get treated at the joints and edges. Bromeliads and planters along the walls are baited and treated. Carpenter ants in porch trim or old window frames are traced to the nest. Fire ant mounds near the home and in swales are treated directly. Victoria Park and Tarpon River bungalows often have old wood window frames and porch columns where moisture builds up, so we probe those for carpenter ant activity. Downtown condo units get baits along the plumbing and window trails.
Courtyards and Coral Stone
Many Fort Lauderdale homes have courtyards, coral stone patios and pool decks with lots of joints and edges where ants nest. We treat those areas and the base of palms and planters around them. If vines or hedges are touching the walls or roof, we'll tell you where to trim. Bromeliads and planters right against the walls are a favorite nesting spot for white-footed ants. Moving pots a few feet off the wall and keeping mulch thin removes a lot of nesting space.
Old Wood and Carpenter Ants
In older bungalows, porches and window trim, damp or soft wood attracts carpenter ants. If you see large ants at night or sawdust-like debris, let us know. We'll find the nest, treat it and recommend fixing the moisture source. Ant activity climbs with the first heavy rains of late spring, when flooded colonies move indoors. Another wave often follows tropical storms in late summer. Treating the perimeter before the wet season starts gives you a head start, and baiting quickly when a trail appears keeps a small problem from turning into a supercolony in the walls. If you rent out a guest cottage or garage apartment, include it in the treatment so ants don't move back and forth.
What to Expect on Your First Visit
We'll identify the ants, follow trails to nests where we can and show you which plants and vines need trimming. Courtyard and pool deck joints get a close look before we treat.
