Cockroaches in Airbnb rentals usually trace back to constant guest turnover, busy kitchens and drains that dry out between bookings. In Fort Lauderdale, add heat, summer rain and shared condo walls. Small German roaches indoors mean an infestation that needs a professional, while one big palmetto bug after a storm is common here. Steve, who hosts an Airbnb in Fort Lauderdale, had cockroaches at his rental and called Pro-Spray, and we took care of it. Here's what every host should know about Airbnb pest control in Fort Lauderdale.

Why cockroaches in Airbnb rentals are so common

Constant turnover. Every check-in brings luggage, grocery bags, takeout containers and delivery boxes. German cockroaches travel easily in bags and cardboard, so a rental with new guests every few days has more chances for a hitchhiker than a home with the same family all year.

Busy kitchens. Guests cook and snack in ways a host can't control. Crumbs under the toaster or a trash bag left by the door overnight is all roaches need.

Empty stretches. When sinks, tubs and floor drains go unused between bookings, the water in the drain trap can dry out and open a path from the pipes. Nobody is there to spot the first roach.

Shared walls and Florida weather. Many rentals here are condos, townhomes or duplexes, and roaches move through plumbing gaps between units. Heat, humidity and rain keep the big outdoor roaches active all year.

Palmetto bugs vs. German cockroaches in a Florida rental

A palmetto bug, the American or smokybrown cockroach, is large, lives mostly outdoors and usually wanders in by accident, especially after rain.

The German cockroach is the one that hurts reviews. It's small and tan, and it breeds indoors in kitchens and bathrooms. If you or a guest sees one, there are almost always more hiding nearby, and German cockroaches in a Florida rental rarely go away on their own.

What to do when a guest reports a roach

  1. Reply quickly and thank the guest for telling you.
  2. Ask for a photo. It tells you whether you're dealing with a stray palmetto bug or a German roach.
  3. Check the spot yourself or have your cleaner check it: under the sink, behind the fridge and stove, and inside cabinet hinges. Look for droppings that resemble ground pepper.
  4. Skip the store-bought spray. It can scatter roaches deeper into the walls and make professional bait less effective.
  5. Book an inspection and plan the visit around your next check-out.

Refunds and rebooking are decided by Airbnb's own policies. For those, see the Airbnb Help Center.

How to get rid of roaches in a rental the right way

Fast and right aren't the same thing. Good roach control means putting the right EPA-registered product in the right spot, applied by a licensed technician according to its label.

  1. A FREE inspection first of the kitchen, bathrooms, appliances, plumbing gaps and exterior entry points.
  2. Bait first. Roach gel bait goes along the routes roaches travel. Bait works best when you skip store-bought sprays, because they can repel roaches away from the bait.
  3. Crack-and-crevice treatment in the voids where roaches shelter, not across counters and floors.
  4. The outside, when it applies. For a house, or a ground-floor unit with the association's OK, we treat a band around your foundation and the lower foundation wall, and spot-treat entry points like door gaps, window frames, weep holes and plumbing openings.
  5. Follow-up. German roaches are rarely a one-visit problem, so we schedule follow-up based on what we find.

Keep kids and pets off treated areas until dry, and follow your technician's instructions. Learn more on our roach control in Fort Lauderdale page.

How hosts stay ahead between guests

  • Let water run in every drain at each turnover so traps stay full.
  • Take all trash outside at checkout and keep outdoor cans lidded.
  • Wipe under the toaster and microwave, and check behind the stove on deep cleans.
  • Store pantry items in sealed containers and break down delivery boxes.
  • Fix drips and leaks, since roaches look for water before food.
  • Ask cleaners to send a photo of any roach they see.
  • Add a house rule asking guests not to leave food out overnight.

Bed bugs are the other turnover pest to watch. See bed bug treatment.

Airbnb cockroach FAQs

What happens if a guest finds a cockroach in my Airbnb?
Respond quickly, ask for a photo so you know whether it's a palmetto bug or a German roach, and book an inspection before the next check-in if you can. Airbnb's own policies decide refunds and rebooking, so check the Airbnb Help Center for those questions.
Should I worry if I've only seen one cockroach?
It depends on the roach. One big palmetto bug near a door after rain is common in South Florida. One small German roach in the kitchen or bathroom is different: they breed indoors, so it usually means more are hiding nearby. That's the time to call.
What time of year are roaches worst in Florida?
Palmetto bugs come indoors more during the warm, rainy months, when heavy rain floods them out of drains and mulch. German roaches live and breed indoors, so they're a problem in any season. A rental needs attention year-round.
Can you get rid of roaches overnight?
No, and be wary of anyone who promises that. A proper treatment usually cuts activity down quickly, but German roach egg cases and hidden roaches mean follow-up visits matter. Bait, crack-and-crevice work and a follow-up plan get results; a one-time spray usually doesn't.
How much does pest control cost for a rental?
We price after a FREE inspection. New customers get $50 off the first service. Ongoing protection is $125 per quarter (about $42 a month), and custom or turnover schedules for hosts are quoted after the inspection. There are no long-term contracts and no cancellation fees.
