Shade is the first thing we look at in a garden here. The older neighborhoods here have some of the thickest tree canopy in South Florida: banyans and palms in Coconut Grove, big shade trees around the mid-century homes of the Upper Eastside, and backyard fruit trees and container gardens in Little River and Little Haiti. That shade, plus bromeliads that hold water in their cups all year, keeps mosquitoes around in every month, not only in summer. Our family-run team handles mosquito control in Miami by treating the shade where adult mosquitoes rest and the water they breed in, starting with a FREE inspection and $50 off your first service.

Bromeliads: the first thing we check

If your yard has bromeliads, that's usually where the problem starts. Rain and sprinklers fill the cup at the center of each plant, and container mosquitoes like the yellow fever mosquito lay eggs right at the waterline. A single bed can hold dozens of tiny pools you'd never think to empty.

You don't have to rip them out. You have two good options:

  • Flush them. Run a hose into each cup once a week so the water is replaced before larvae can finish growing.
  • Let us treat them. On each visit we apply larvicide to the bromeliad cups so larvae can't develop. Our bromeliads and mosquitoes guide has more.

Mosquito control in Miami, neighborhood by neighborhood

Coconut Grove. Dense canopy, deep porches and walled courtyards. Adults rest under the porch overhang, along garden walls and in the beds under the banyans. We work through the parts of the garden you care about most and keep the backpack fogger off flowers in bloom.

Upper Eastside, Morningside and Belle Meade. These streets sit between Biscayne Bay and the Little River, the old waterway that runs through the area to the bay. Bay-side and river-side lots get mosquitoes from the shoreline growth as well as their own yards, so the shady side of the house and the plantings on the land side of the seawall get the most time. We never spray into or toward the bay or the river.

Little River and Little Haiti. Backyard gardens, fruit trees, buckets and plant pots. Here the breeding water is usually right in the yard: a tarp over the woodpile, a bucket under the downspout, a stack of nursery pots. We find those on the first walk and treat the side yards and the space behind the A/C unit where mosquitoes wait out the sun.

Edgewater and townhome courtyards. Small, enclosed courtyards with fountains and potted plants hold more mosquitoes than their size suggests. If the courtyard is yours to treat, or your association approves, we treat it.

What we do on each visit

  1. A walk with you. On the first visit, the FREE inspection, we look for every resting spot and breeding spot and ask where you sit, grill and let the dog out.
  2. Resting spots. A licensed technician treats the still shade where adults spend the day: inside hedges, under palms and banyans, under porches, stairs and decks, along fences and garden walls. The backpack fogger is for outdoor work only. We never use it indoors.
  3. Breeding spots that can't be emptied. Bromeliad cups, drains and fountains or water features without fish get larvicide, where the product label allows. We don't treat ponds with fish.
  4. Larval traps on monthly plans. Monthly plans add larval traps set in the shade. They use a growth regulator, like birth control for insects, to help stop larvae from becoming biting adults.
  5. What to do before next time. We tell you what to tip out, cover or flush.

It's a professional mosquito barrier spray treatment, and every product is applied according to its label. More detail in how our mosquito treatment works.

Wet season, dry season

From about late May through October, afternoon storms refill containers almost every day, and in that heat mosquitoes can go from egg to biting adult in about a week. That's when monthly visits matter most. We recommend monthly service, especially in the rainy season, and we can adjust the schedule to your property. Because bromeliads and shade keep some breeding going through the cooler months, many Grove and Upper Eastside gardens stay on a steady schedule. Others space visits out in winter.

Between visits: flush bromeliads weekly, tip out saucers and buckets, keep gutters clear under big trees, and patch torn porch or lanai screens.

Mosquito Control FAQs

Do bromeliads really breed mosquitoes?
Yes. Water sits in the cup at the base of the leaves and can breed mosquitoes all year. Flush them weekly with a hose, or have us treat them with larvicide on each visit.
Will treatment damage my garden?
We treat the shady resting spots, not the blooms, and we plan the visit around the parts of the garden you care about most. Show us on the first walk.
I live on the bay. Why are there more mosquitoes on my side of the house?
Bay-side homes get mosquitoes drifting in from shoreline growth, and they rest in the first shade they reach. We spend extra time there, treating from land and never toward the water.
Can you treat a courtyard with a fountain?
Yes, if the courtyard is yours or your association approves. A fountain without fish can get larvicide where the product label allows. We don't treat ponds or fountains with fish.
How often should mosquito treatments be done?
Monthly. We recommend monthly treatments, especially during the rainy season, with the schedule customized to your property.
